if I wanted to set up a VPN connection between my computer and another person's computer, how would I go about this? Is it possible if I'm behind a router/ADSL Modem? And can I do it if I have a dynamic IP instead of a static one?

Get two of the Linksys (Cisco) VPN access points. You should be able to tie them together.

Yes, you could do it with dynamic addresses, but if you ever get a different address, you'll need to tweak the settings.

ok, three cent guide, using windows 2000, untested, you're on your own, all I can do is tell you how to start.

go to the 'properties' of your 'network neighboorhood' (=control panel/network)
'create new connection' (sorry, got a german windows here. try to find the right one ;-) )

server
'accept incoming connections', choose vpn further on. fill in the rest. you're set to go.

client pc
second option from top, the one with VPN in it. insert details.
once you're finished, start connection.

should hook you up all by itself.

need more details?

This might help. PcAnywhere

I've not used it, nor have I seen it I just know it's supposed to give you access to your PC from anywhere (provided you install the client, I would suppose)

PCAnywhere is total garbage. Big footprint, little results. Save the cash. You'd be better off doing something like REMOTE DESKTOP in XP or Terminal Services in 2000.

As Pugzly said, PcAnywhere is really bloated... The same thing that it provides can be done with Windows Remote Desktop / Terminal Services or with VNC (it's free and cross-platform) - RealVNC or TightVNC...

And with Remote Desktop or Terminal Services, you can use a web browser to connect to another machine.

The same goes for VNC There are VNC clients written as Java applets...

OK...are you then able to tell me how I use terminal services to do it?

I'm not sure how we got from VPN to 'remote control', though.

(which is saying: I can see the post that switched this thread into 'remote controlled mode', but I can't see why it was brought up, and why in would help Skaarjj in his quest for a virtual private network (something quite different))
