I've got an AVI i want to put on a disc that can play in most DVD players. I only have a CD-Burner. What programs do I need and format create the disc? As you can see I know very little about these things

For what i know (i could be wrong) you may need a dvd burner, which come with program that can do that.

You need to create a VideoCD (basically it's in MPEG2 format) from that AVI movie in order to be able to play it back using standalone DVD player. Most modern CD burning applications can generate VideoCDs, and I suggest you to try Nero Burning Rom...

I don't have a DVD burner and I have no idea how to burn one but I would say that Windows Movie Maker v.2, that's a free addition to WinXP, can do the job. But you do need a DVD burner, not a CD burner, to do the trick. And the media is also different: you need a blank DVD disk and not a blank CD disk. DVD stuff is much more expensive than CD stuff, but yet affordable these days. I am just waiting them to become much cheaper to buy a DVD burner.

You do not need a DVD-Burner to make a VCD.
Any decent cd burning program will have this option.
Most DVD players can play VCD's.

Yeah, normal CD burners can burn VCDs just fine, and most DVD players can play 'em too.

Actually, if your DVD player can handle it (and you have the software necessary), I'd recommend burning to SVCD. Almost the same, just better quality.

I had read some articles about burning DVDs and never understood it like this.

Ahh, but what am I to do if the video is 86mins? Thats 6 mins than I can fit on a VCD :P Looks like I may have to split it up.

Blank CDs are extremely cheap nowadays, so I guess that you'll be ok with two CDs instead of one...

BTW Even most VCD movie titles ship as two CDs, because they can't fit on one CD.

The 2 programs I use make this a very easy process:

1) Tmpgenc - Small encoding program, will convert to MPEG1(Video CD) or MPEG2(dvd)
2) Nero Burning Rom - I am sure there are others, for free, but this program is very easy to make VCDs with.

If you are making the videos for regular CDs, keep in mind when encoding VCD format that each CD will hold about an hours worth of video, so a 2 hour movie will need to be split in half. You can accomplish this with Tmpegenc.
