howdy.

i like to clean up my pc every now and then (ie toast the bugger, and re-install), but don't like re-installing everything.

now, i know that there are some good imaging or ghosting software items out there, that can take a snapshot of your hd, and burn it to a cd (or 2), so the next time, you can simply boot from the cd, and it'll clean up your HD for you.

my question is - which software titles do you recommend? are there any good quality freeware ones out there?

the only software titles i know of are norton ghost (i think), and InstantRecovery Personal Edition 4.1 ($45, shareware)

any other suggestions?

My company uses Norton Ghost to image the drives on $250,000 systems. It must be sorta decent.

I wish thats all it took for my system. My fresh install with Operating System and Applications is 9 GB.

I use Drive Image 2002, from Powerquest. I just love it. It does what you need and more. But it's not free.

or most 'on cdrom' linuxes can do it as well.
but you'd have to do some climbing to get it onto cdr, instead of say, a network drive.

Remote Installation Services (RIS), along with Software Update Services (SUS), and SMS - all from Microsoft, are what we use for everything. We've done thousands of machines....

I've used Ghost as well, but that lacks the flexibility of the above mentioned scenario.

And for the ultimate backup - why not send it to the moon:
