It appears some people are finally deciding to revamp Nethack's GUI here: http://noegnud.sourceforge.net/
For those that don't know what Nethack is, check out this link: http://www.nethack.org/

I never played NETHACK but those "skins" are pretty cool compared to plain/text

You have to try nethack. It is the older, but better version of Diablo

The 2d/3d version there seems kind of wrong. A 18+ year old game should not look like that

I've always liked the old ascii version of nethack, don't know why actually. It kind of suits the game better imo. But at the university we have the Qt version installed and I'm getting used to that one now. Got to admit that it is a lot easier to recognise things when they have an image, and not just a plain character.

Man, that looks very much like Moria. I used to play Moria in text on my Amiga. Eventually, somebody made a multi-coloured font for it. Moira was seriously fun.

If you liked Moria, you may enjoy Angband more than Nethack because Angband is really Moria's descendent. Another good game to check out is Adom. Adom is my personal favorite of the bunch. Really all of these games are excellent. They're like Diablo x1000!

Just took Angband for a spin. Man! Talk about memories and many wasted hours. Fischer King, the 1/2 troll fighter shall be reborn!

ADOM looks pretty tasty. Any idea if our own models can be added? You know, like characters and monsters? I tried getting to the FAQ, but it was 404 or something.

edit: I was assuming that the gallery were game shots. Don't mind me.

Adom is not open source. Nethack is, so to add monsters and such you have to know C, and know the source. Angband is open source as well, but angband also allows you to modify items and monsters etc. through simple text files. I suppose this is why there are soooo many variants of Angband compared the sparse amount nethack has. In vanilla (or the original, non variant) angband. These text files are in the /lib/edit/ directory I believe. They all have headers which explains their syntax.

Oh no! More games like that, I'm never going to get anything done now

Just tried out Angband. Was pretty fun, but I Nethack is still a step ahead. Going to try Adom tomorrow...

That's right, Ven. No work!

Adom is pretty good. Hitting ? then k is the norm. I hate learning new commands.
Ven, a quick word of advice for Adom: have plenty of food. You can starve to death fairly quickly if you don't watch it. If you are lucky, then you might be able to eat a corpse from time to time. Rat and goblin corpses were the staple of my diet for the first few levels. The really suck part is that carrying more stuff makes you hungry that much quicker (at least it seems that way so far).

I was doing pretty well until I found the mad carpenter. I was getting crazy with the Cheese Whiz when he popped up. Then he whipped me pretty bad because I wasn't paying attention to my hp. By the time I noticed how badly hurt I was, it was too late. Good thing I dropped by saved file into another directory. I'll give it another whack later tonight.

Schitzoboy, I seriously hate you for turning me on to Adom.
I'm having a bitch of a time getting a character - any character - past 5th level.

Net hack is likre an older version of Castle of the Winds, but with more stuff to do in it.
Castle of the Winds

Its fun to have a game that i can just sit down and play again. Been a while since I found one good enough to do that with.

Haven't gotten any work done lately, but I managed to get a fighter to lvl 7 in Adom! Found a nice little cave north-west of the first village where you can gain the first couple of levels pretty quickly

Not sure yet which is better of that one and Nethack, both are great games! Angband is currently on a nice third. Castle of the Winds was ok, but the others are better. Just the fact that you have to pay for the 'expansion' puts me off that one. I might never get far enough to need the expansion, but these kind of games are supposed to be free

And now back to working on my Adom character...
