At last! Fall registration traffic in the office begins to slack off and I'm finally starting to organize the photos from the trip to Scotland. I was surprised at how many of them came out, and that they came out so well... I want to show them all, but it takes a godawful lot of time to prepare them for display on the web... so freekin' many of them!
But, I did want to share this one with Lacuna, just because I took it thinking of you!

The closest I got to a man in a kilt... much less what was up it! Not sure what he and his buddies were looking at... my sisters and I were too busy looking like tourists in Edinburgh! (A fabulous city, BTW - spend a weekend there if you ever get the chance!)
I have much more to share, and many stories to tell... but it may all come in piecemeal...

Oh yes, Irn Bru is some interesting stuff... bubblegum flavored soda, indeed! I didn't get a chance to find out if it really cures a hangover, but it was tasty, if odd...

Cheers!

I know, I know... If he'd turned a little further to his left, you might have had that shot, Lacuna...

I was a little shy, so I didn't ask him if I could snap the shot, just took a general street shot and made sure he was in clear view!

Though - while we were waiting for a pub crawl to begin on the Grassmarket in Edinburgh, there was a stag party going on at the same pub where we were starting.... Some commotion in the street caught our attention, and there was this guy struttin' up the street with nary a stitch on! But when someone grabbed for a camera, he got shy and ran off... I wished I could have brought that one back to you! I mean, if you're gonna go streakin', you might as well be good lookin'!

Pictures... so very many pictures... I'll post a couple more in the next day or 2...

edit: TBB - I like your new siggie!

Here's a couple of pictures from our first stop in Scotland - the Isle of Iona. This place is a piece of heaven on earth. The village is small and friendly, they work together to conserve their limited environment, and the place is simply beautiful!
The first night, sitting at the pub with a fresh Guiness draught in hand, my sister Ann (from Boston) took this photo of the sunset...
(if you're using dial up, sorry about the size of the pics, it might take a few seconds extra to load...)

On the last night on the island, we took a walk to climb the big rock that is the center of the island (a big hill, perhaps a very small mountain...), on the way there, we saw this rainbow...

From the top of the hill, I took this photo of the village below...

At the top, there's this pile of rocks put there by visitors who've climbed the hill. It's at the highest point of the summit. I'm in the middle, my mom's on my right, and our friend who went with us is on the left. My sister Kate took this photo. There was something really cool going on behind us with the light. It's about 8:30pm at the time this photo was taken...

For those of you who live farther to the north, this daylight thing may not be a big deal... but for those of us to the south, it was a little strange to experience... cool, but I swear we didn't get any sleep! Up until midnight or later, and awake at 6 am every morning... yech!

But it was so fun, and so worth it!
Hope you enjoy the pictures as much as I do... more to come!

I guess you all know what's worn under a scotsman's kilt .... ??
(Nothing .. it's all in good working order)

A woman put her hand up a scotsman's kilt to see if what she'd heard was true ...
"Arrgh!", she exclaimed .. "It's gruesome" ... to which the scotsman replied ...
"Aye lassie ... and if you shove your hand up there again it'll probably gruesome more ..."

Ah .. oldies but goodies !!

Iona is fabulous, a piece of heaven, really. You should go sometime... All of you!

From Iona, we went to Edinburgh. A major culture shock once we got there, but after we got settled in, that city is a BLAST! I mean, apart from the stag party that we got to observe... Edinburgh has a gritty and interesting past. (To match up with the gritty and interesting present!) WE got to see the Scottish Honours, i.e.: the Crown Jewels, which have since been retired from use (as the Scottich monarchy is now the English monarchy). But they are stunning! Of course, they don't let you take pictures of them, for security reasons. Otherwise, I could share them with you... the pictures in my head just don't do it justice... We went on a literary pub tour, and heard stories about Edinburgh's famous literary figures, Robbie Burns, Walter C. Scott and their compatriots... All while crawling the local pubs. And we also took a tour of Edinburgh's underground city: the vaults under the South Bridge, Mary King's Close and all that good spooky stuff! I must say, the 16th and 17th centuries were pretty nasty... well, most centuries were pretty nasty until they discovered hygiene... But interesting... very interesting... I'll put up a couple of photos for your enjoyment in the next 24 hours or so... I've got some nice ones of Edinburgh.

As for the weather, it was chilly on Iona, but that had more to do with the fact that it was an island... that sea breeze is nippy! But Edinburgh was sweltering for a Scottish city... the temps while we were there were between 73 - 80, and sunny! A treat for us southern Americans, but it made things uncomfortable for the folks who live there year 'round! All in all, we had magnificent weather. It barely rained at all while we were there, which, as I understand it, is a pretty big deal. And when it did rain, it did so early in the morning, and burned off by mid afternoon...

you did well to get that first picture, last year I went to Scotland about 20 times and never once saw anyone in a kilt, even though the town I was stopping in had a kilt shop. . .

Kilts are bloomin' expensive! 200 pounds each! Not to mention the accessories that go with them... (my keyboard doesn't have that fancy "pound" sign here...) He was the only guy, not playing a bagpipe that I saw wearing one... I made sure to snap that one for Lacuna. Unfortunately, I didn't get as much detail as she wanted!

I would go back there in a heartbeat if I could swing the plane fare! I didn't get to see anywhere near as much as I wanted to of the country. We barely touched Glasgow, just flying in and back out again... Didn't get much past Buchanan St. Fortunately, we happened upon a wonderful taxi driver, Walter Thompson, who was willing to take us the long way around (for not too much extra) so that we could see as much as we could get to... And heck, I could have stayed on Iona the entire time and been just as happy.
Lindisfarne and Durham were so quiet and (I hesitate to say...) dull... comparatively. But each of the places we went had their merits.
And the landscape everywhere was perfect...
