I have just build an AMD K62 300 computer out of spare parts i had laying around, and was wondering, whats the best OS to put on it for maximum functionality. I dont want to play top end games or anything, but put it on a network to gain access to the net, and play music really. I have been interested in trying Lindows, but dont want to fork out for something that may not be suitable.

I got a minimum of 64 meg ram, ATI Mach64 legacy gfx card,a nd some old sound card.

If you just want to try something, why not try Red Hat Linux or Slackware Linux - they are both free.

For older systems, I would recommend an older version of Slackware, but Red Hat is much easier to install (especially for first-time users).

Also: I have been able to run Win2000 on a system with a Pentium 200. It wasn't very fast, but it was better than any other windows version on the same system.

[edit] It does take a long time to download Linux if you don't have a fast internet connection [/edit]

For a backdoor system like that I would use Win98 Se, as viol mentioned. If you want to ply low-end games (i.e. Dos) you almost need to have an old system like this. I've tried and tried to get my old games to work in XP and it just isn't happening. My old laptop runs them beautifully though.

Hey... I have a spare AMD K6-2 500 cpu sitting around. It has never been used other than being checked by a supplier to see that the cpu is fine and that it was my old motherboard that didn't support it (even though it was supposed to)....

Anyways, its yours if you want it. I imagine it could handle snail mail pretty well if I packed it properly.

well, that last message is normal, not an error.

most likely cause is that you forgot to install a boot loader, like lilo.

I might suggest installing debian over the net instead... it's much more of a distro nowadays than slackware,
and as free as you're gonna get (and has one lovely package-management system).
