Sometimes, it's a real PITA because of what you've said, many times we have to just wait endlessly until the guy(s) in front of you is able to make the turn - while you just want to go straight ahead but made the mistake of staying in the wrong lane at the wrong moment - but many other times, being able to turn in almost every place is extremely handy. This is not usual in my country (Brazil). There, these left turns are simply prohibited. You have specific places to be able to do it.
