Hey ho... is it bad when your computer starts to do "system memory dumps"?

Anywhoo.... it is kinda buggin me. After the last virus scare, i tried to install the latest win2K system pack, but after I installed that the system would not even boot. So I reinstalled win2k... and left it as is. All was happy. Except, every now and then the memory takes a dump.

It just now rebooted from the aforementioned dump, and just under half of my 512 mb of ram were being used... for about 5 minutes (after the computer had loaded all its snazz) for no apparent reason, then the memory usage dropped back down to normal.

I get something similar under XP occasionally, where, instead of half my memory being taken up explorer.exe takes up 99% of my processor power...when I don't even have a windows explorer window open...

Skaarjj: That sounds more like a virus. If XP has the same style task manager (I'm guessing that's what your looking at) as 2000, which enumerates the running processes, a process may be called explorer.exe but the task manager doesn't display the actual location of the source file... so your computer could be running: C:\windows\my new virus\explorer.exe instead of: C:\windows\explorer.exe. But I don't know much about XP so it could be different, I guess.

It does do that but I've tweaked my XP to show full paths in there, so I know it's the correct explorer.exe
