I haven't installed it yet because my headset is buried.
I am also leary of extra crap, but some folks are saying that there isn't any.

Any users out there care to give some thoughts?
Or anybody care to try it out and beat me to the punch?

Whenever lets me make calls to cel phones, then i would give it a chance. I just dont do that much phone calls specially when half of my buddies get online on nights. The other half i see it thru the week in my city trips :P.

Is it just me, or is the association with Kazaa a *bad* thing?

Just tested it between me on DSL and a friend on cable and it was fanfreakin tastic, both of us using headsets. There was some cutting out at the beginning of the conversation as he called when I was uploading a bunch of heavy graphics files via FTP but after the uploads were done it was perfect.

There was a small echo we were both hearing but it wasn't a bother and most likely was due to our sound settings.

No sign of extra "goodies" then, I take it.

If I can get the kids to settle, I'll dig out my headset and give it a whirl.
Hopefully sometime tomorrow.

I just had a full blue screen crash a few minutes ago when I hung up a phone call. To be continued I guess...

I have skype just a few days and it looks good sofar, if i only could find the cable breach from my haedset and fix it.
Then i could talk too..

So how's this going for you ppl? Still using it or have you dumped it? Problems would be?

I got it installed and I signed up using 'warjournal'. Did some dinking around with it, but nothing major.
However, the kids haven't let me dig out my headset yet. This has been the weekend from Hades. Minimum of two kids all to myself and the toddler is sick.

JKM, is it crashing you consistantly?

oof, haven't touched it since it crashed, been busy. I'll keep an eye out for this thread, see what's up. I have it installed, and the headset, at my office, prolly won't be back in there til monday

Well, we had cheap Mexican, so you might be able to imagine. I swear, it was like getting hit with a Mike Tyson uppercut just below the diaphram.

Mac users have iChat AV and it works great. You can use it with or with out a webcam and the audio is fantastic. I'm in Juneau and my girlfriend is in Anchorage,so we use it every day. Why pay long distance phone charges?

Doh! Man, I'm really sorry about this.

Skype is merely 1-on-1, so I don't think it will do for an Asylum chat attack.

I did some more poking around and found Ventrilo. Multiple chatters and it's free. Heard good stuff about it, but not exactly from "proper" sources. Client comes in Win, and server comes in several flavors - mixed blessing.

I have to go for a few days except for the occassional hit-n-run.
Someone is going to Las Vegas and someone else has to stay with the kids. Guess which one I ended up with.

Ok I tried to call dmsproject, warjournal, and jasomabry and all three users don't show up in the users database for Skype??? what's up with that? Are all you guys still registered?

It doesn't sound like this is working itself out very well, Skype that is. So I think I'll stick to the usually dreaded msn messenger (6.1) I've had a great chat using it with Grythus Draconis. Had a couple of setting up problems, but once that was sorted It worked well just using a very old microphone and speakers.
I'm registered with msn as taobaybee.

I've got the Ventrilo server setup on Woman's machine. I'm going to open it up Saturday around noon EST. I'm going to leave it running all weekend long. Not sure how well it will get along with Sysgate Personal Firewall, though. Guess we'll find out the hard way.

If you want the server information, e-mail me with "Ventrilo Server" in the subject.
I will do my best to keep on top of the e-mail. Hell, I might even fire up ICQ for possible troubleshooting. Both should still be available in my profile.
I will also try to keep on top of this thread in case both of those fail. Or maybe start a new thread, which might not be a bad idea.
If I have to be AFK, I will do my my best to check all avenues of communication at the top and bottom of every hour.

If this goes well, I would like to open it up one weekend a month or so.
