on top of every guru's gab peak lies something that made me think about what GN really means to me. Pugzly writes:

quote:
The end of Gurus Network? (10-29-2003 until 12-31-2003)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The time has come to re-evaluate this site. It is currently consuming more than 30GB of space a month. That's bandwidth that I pay for out of my pocket.

I have decided that we need to design & implement a way of recouping those costs before December 31st of this year, or I will be forced to terminate hosting of this site.

I'm sorry, but that's just the way it goes.

We also need to get rid of this development domain. IT WAS NEVER INTENDED TO BE LIVE.

For me, that was big for a few seconds. I do not believe that GN will go down. We are far too great in number to let that happen. So instead of panic I thought I should rather say Thankyou Guru's Network for everything you've brought me. Especially Steve for his conciseness, and both DarkGarden & Schitzoboy for helping me be creative, plus everybody in THIS FORUM and GURU's Gab.

Um, this was news two weeks ago. But I guess better late than never.

For those interested, here is the ongoing discussion at the GN.

wow.... I hadn't heard of this...

what can we do (besides bakesales and suitcases full of cash)?

Why is Gurusnet so big, anyway? I hope it's not the forums, I never thought they were a good idea.... the way I see it, Gurusnet is 'Our Handbook', the Wiki 'Our Knowledge Base', and the ASYLUM 'Our Community'.. I don't like the factioning of Aslyum/GN....

*ahem*</rant>

what *is* it so big, anyway?
... and what can we do?

I believe it's mainly the forum being well travelled by web crawlers that's eating large amounts of the bandwidth, possibly a lot of the static content too. And you can't blame people for wanting to access such great content.

In any event I believe emps, being the busy little bugger that he is, has been working to curb some of the bandwidth being eaten up by the overzealous web crawlers, but I'd doubt pugz would turn down any donations you could make through paypal.

As for the asylum/GN communities -- I think they both have their places. To me, the GN community is more academic whereas the asylum is more social and less formal.

I think a PayPal donation link to GN or their provider to pay for cost would be a GREAT idea.

there's actually a donate button at the top of the discussion forum buried in the line of blue buttons at the top; or if you use paypal a lot send some cash to billing at runningwolf dot com

The poster has demanded we remove all his contributions, less he takes legal action.
We have done so.
Now Tyberius Prime expects him to start complaining that we removed his 'free speech' since this message will replace all of his posts, past and future.
Don't follow his example - seek real life help first.

Everything should be fine its partly the "Attack of the Dumb Robots" and I have spoken to the worst ones (5Gb/month from one set of robots!!) and we will be taking various other measures to sort things out.

As has been said their is a donate button on the main forum page.

Basically just read that thread at the GN as explains various things - if it doesn't then let us know.

InI: Thanks for the offer - we'll see how things go.

InI: If there was any easy way to identify them in general we would - so far emailing the worst abusers individually and asking them to stop has worked but if it doesn't I will be implementing various htaccess things.
