So I was browsing thru my HD, organizing files and freeing some space for it (having just 1 gig free on a 12 gb hd and not being sure about the reason of it is bad). Being bored i enter to my borland folder (i got borland c++ compiler almost a year ago), and i see that there is for some reason a folder labeled mandrake9.0, and i go like "wtf?!". i open it, voial, 3 mandrake iso images holding 2 gigs in my hd, and seemingly corrupt. Not having the elements to make a posible backup on a cd to check, i say byebye to it, thuis having more free hd space than expected. ooh, seeing how much am tempted to test a *nix os on my comp, results ironic getting rid of a chance of trying it.

My big major question is, why in the fuck i had it? I doubt i got it in the same place than borland, and why i didnt remember i had it until now? (no need to answer, its just funny to see the irony).

Has anyone else had these kind of things happening?

Not if they *were* corrupt

Anyway, I have stuff threw all over my harddrive. When I go my new 80GB HD, I partitioned off two chuncks of it, one for Linux Mandrake and the other to "store files". I am sure I have multiples of many files here and there that would free up a lot of space. But, I have never had an *iso, or any other file just appear in a folder before. Are you sure you didn't download them or copy them at some point? I don't use Borland C++ but I doubt that the iso's would come *with* it.

But, if you still want to try Linux you can certainly get it very cheap of course. So it's not a total loss. Besides 9.2 is out

Back in that time i had no idea what mandrake was. I knew what an iso was, tho, but i doubt i'd dl something if i dont have any clue what it is. I supect taht for some reason i got them from the same ftp server than borland or something, but even then, i have had problems downloading smaller files (say, 300 mb take me almost a month), and i didnt know about bittorrent back in taht time (i say this because BitTorrent makes the file with its total filesize you are going to dl before you even start). Kind of weird.

Anyway, had i any way to back up all my stuff (as i said cd burner is broken and i dont have enuffmoney for getting a new cd drive), I'd surely buy a linux os.

Funny stuff happens sometimes.

I'm interested in using linux, but I dunno if all the things I like to do now I'll be able to do in it.

To start with, can I use MSN messenger? or does trillian work at least?

dark- I had submitted with the error, but quickly realized it and ESC>fixed the error>re-clicked the 'submit' button... didn't notice I had double-posted until I saw the tab still open on Mozilla... (then I simply deleted the post)...

prawny- "MSN Messenger" might be hard to use without a workaround, but SourceForge has gagillions of IM emulators that usually carry ICQ, MSN, AIM, Yahoo IM, Jabber, and IRC (which has always perplexed me, because I don't think I consider IRC an "Instant Messenger")...

I have found a willing (but ugly and ill-named) mistress in Miranda... runs on Windows, too...

Thanks, Petskull, as long as I can actually communicate to the people I have on MSN, that's the main thing.

I think converting to Linux is something I should do when I have lots of free time, and possibly a new PC so I can use this one for Linux and have the new one as my Windows poot. I am very interested in it though.

That is a way to go. You could also just get an additional hard drive and load Linux on it and just have a dual boot. Cheaper

That's an idea, a good idea too. I already have 2 x 20GB drives, so replacing my non-windows drive with a larger one and then partitioning it is a good idea.

What file system does Linux use? ie Fat32 / NTFS (I'm assuming it does't use either)

ext3.. lemme find you the howto on that, though...

Edit- aha, here it is- http://linux-newbie.sunsite.dk/lnag_before_install.html#partitioning_hd

..scroll down almost to the end of the section for a summary of each filesystem..

I can see my WinXP partition on Mandrake, but ask if I can see my Linux Partition on XP.... HA!

Edit2- Ah, yes... I used Partition Magic to repartition my 40Gb drive into 7Gb for WinXP, 7Gb for MDK, and 23 Gb for my data (dubbed my "Slinky" Drive).. these numbers are approximate because of the cylinder endings on the drive, etc.. (the documentation on the Partition Magic CD proved invaluble in this regard, as did it's Skillz..)

I repartitioned my HD with not a single bit of data lost! Thanks, Partition Magic!

Format as follows
WinXP 6.83Gb NTFS
MDK 7.02Gb Ext3
Slinky 23.5Gb Fat32

Slinky is Fat32 for universal OS compatibility (side note- I never could keep any free space on my drives before, but now I can't seem to fill up more that 2Gb of data on this drive!! send me crap!!), it works well in both MDK and WinXP...

To be 100% honest, MSN has been being a bitch since they went with that v2.0 protocol crap... Trillian hates it, Miranda hates it, hell even MSN messenger is a bitch about it sometimes *sigh* what do you want? It's Microsoft.. MSN is shitty, period... and if I could get my sister in Texas to switch to ICQ or Jabber (wonderfull, community owned protocol, shame more people aren't using it), I'd scrap that shit altogether...

Partition Magic sounds...magic, if I could repartition my drives without losing anything, that'd be great.

For now though I have 2x20GB drives, so I could use 1 drive for windows (which I already do have) and 1 drive for Linux (which at the moment is used for "my document" type things and music), and possibly partition the Linux drive into 2x10GB partitions, I'll have to read that link thoroughly.

Thanks for all the info though. Great help.

Yep, you can. Well, you can see it, but you can't move any files around or anything like you can from Linux. You just need this handy dandy prog.

Wine will run photoshop on Linux usually but not necessarily well.

prawn, Mandrake Linux (which I recommend for Linux newbies RedHat is just as good) will partition your drive for you without data loss in the install process.

That being said, you may want to do this with Partition Magic first in Windows to stay away from mistakes.

Petskull: not a problem. I tried out a program that let you run Photoshop in Linux. Can't remember the name of it. It was posted here though.
It ran pretty well just kind of strange.

Actually Wine apparently works fine with Photoshop 7.

Wine is a layer that tuns on Linux that allows you to run some Windows apps with mixed success.
