I survived my first exhibition today! -> Not without a bucket load a stress though.

*** My advance appologies for the most likely lengthy trumpet blowing post, but I'm worn out and coundn't be arsed trying to be concise right about now. ***

I started setting up around 12:00 after lugging in all the equipment. Then I ran into some last minute glitches and spent from 1:00pm till 5:45pm re-programming and tweaking various components to get it up and running at a decent speed -- the exhibition opened at 6:00pm.

I never want to cut it that close ever ever ever again. No amount of coffee can ease that kind of stress, trust me I tried.

Anyways, at 5:50 I popped out for a smoke and when I finished some 250+ people had appeared in the exhibition space and they were sill strolling through the doors. It was a shared space with about 20 works on display total but I was one of the four big installations, oh and there were some other works being display in a faux VR cave.

Anyways, I was quite apprehensive to switch my work on for a little while. I'd spent the better part of 3 months of sleepless nights on this, what if they didn't like it? What if it broke again?

I tip toed around for a while, seeing how the crowd viewed other peoples works, and after a good 10 minutes of doing a darn good job of avoiding even showing my work one of my uni friends went and switched the bloody thing on when I wasn't looking. As I turned around I found a couple of kids getting stuck into it and having a grand old time.

After spending such a large amount of time and research building something that I wasn't sure would even work up until three days ago it's such a reward to see people having fun with it. To see it doing what I intended it to do.

I must say that up until yesterday I was swearing that I'd never attempt to make an interactive installation work ever again. After today I'd happily do it all again. I'd also like to encourage anyone else here who has an opportunity to try their hand and installations stuff -- at the end of the day it's definatly worth the growing pains IMHO.

-----

Some of you may know what I was working on recently, some of you may not. I kicked around some of the ideas I was playing with in the multimedia forum a few months back. To put it in a sentence, you can interact with stuff on a projected screen by casting your shadow onto it like rain flowing around your shadow or schools of fish that hide in your shadow and stuff. If that just confused you then you'll have to wait for the video documentation I'll be making when I re-exhibit it for the SOOB (Straight Out Of Brisbane) exhibition in early December.

Ergh, that was long... screw it. I need sleep.

Wooo! Good going Drac...you'll go far mate...

Tip for doing exhibitions: Forget about the worries mate! You've done it, it's there, just turn the damn thing on and to hell with what people think...you like it don't you?

glad it was a success, sleep will be sweet, when you get it. Let us know if you just passed out for a day or if you lie awake thinking about how cool it was =D

Jason, sleep was nice, could have done without the hangover though.

Yannah, it was shown at the QUT Cutural Theater at Gardens Point (near the river side stage in the city) and will be reshown, after I've made some suitable adjustments based on the feedback I recieved, in the first week of december in the TC Berine arcade (between the Brunswick st. Mall and China Town in the valley) as part of SOOB, which is shaping up to be quite a nice festivle on a whole. Just the new media section is looking quite exciting indeed not to mention all the other stuff that'll be happening over that week. -> http://www.straightoutofbrisbane.com/newmedia/

That's great Cameron. Glad that it went well. Kind of funny that your friend switched it on for you. Might have sat there forever before you got the nerve to do it yourself

Know the feeling all too well

Good job!!!

WHEN was that?
I was in south bank on Sunday. City is really cool, I would love to live there one day. Ok this is out of the question now.
I think you need a rest now.

I'm sorry, I don't get what you were trying to accomplish... but I'm sure glad it worked!

Congrats, Drak!
