Curious thing I thought I might ask:

Why is my internet connection (56k) slow as shit in Windows XP, but under Windows 2k, it's real fast (almost frieghteningly fast, Cable speed sometime!)

I beleive that it is because XP is such a memory hog

I believe "out of the box" XP does require more memory than other win32 OS's.

One example is the same game recommends having double the ram for XP, but all other win32 OS's can use the normal amount.

It could be that your caching is set up different.
