I've discover the directory dmoz.org a month ago. What do you think about it!

Personally i've notice that not all the stuff you will find in dmoz.org will apear in google directory?

Do you know why...

dmoz is a well respected human maintained/edited index of the web (that no one actually ever uses)

so, yeah, what's it for?!

The reason all the things in dmoz.org also appears in Google directory is that Google takes its directory listing from dmoz. So if you want to get listed in Google directory, add your site to dmoz.org. Been considering doing that with my site, but I haven't had the time yet.

It is one of the better link directories/index available. If you're searching for on a specific subject it might be easier to find pages through a directory listing, since all pages will then be sorted by subject. Since most(/all?) directory listing online are sorted by humans they also have a kind of quality check, so the chances of finding a good page might be better than finding one through a search engine. But directories was more used (at least by me and those I know) before Google came along, now Google finds good pages anyhow and you don't need to browse the directories to find good pages.

Actually DMOZ is signifigant in being an index that many engines used to pull from. Prior to the explosion of google the main databases you wanted your site to be listed in were dmoz and inkatomi. Yahoo, canada.com, hotbot, excite and others pulled mainly from inkatomi with an additon of some of their own indexing algorithms. AOL and its vast web of vile associates primarily pulled their results using the DMOZ index data. As I am no longer a search engine fetishist I am not up on the current engine associations and interactions but you can find all you want to know about those issues at.... http://searchenginewatch.com/

righto, when I discovered I could target the engines I was interested in by submitting to Google and Inktomi, I no longer even thought of dmoz, becasue after all, I never knew a single (computer lay-)person that actually *used* it to find something.
