In my younger days I was in karate. Specifically, Tang Soo Do. I used to go twice a day, train on my own - and never give it a second thought. That is, I pushed myself damn hard with out having to "force" it. It was just plain natural.
I'll never forget something that happened with Mitch, one of the cooler students. He got down and started doing sit-ups. The rest of us were doing other things. When we were done, Mitch was still doing sit-ups. We asked him how many he had done and he told us 500. Man, we were amazed! So we got down to see how many we could do. Personally, I got bored after 350, and I still wasn't feeling it.
I could do well over 200 push-ups on my fingertips.
I could touch the wall behind my head with my toe.
I could do the splits.
Even though I didn't jog on a regular basis, I could run a 5 minute mile without breaking a sweat.
I could catch arrows.
I could punch without touching.
And the list goes on.
Now I'm in pathetic shape. I helped my brother-in-law move furniture and it just about destroyed me. I bought some weights and I can't throw them around like I used to be able to do. I can't even jog at a mild pace for 5 minutes - let alone last a full mile.
Damn laziness. Not to mention my addictions.
Back in my party days I started smoking. After my party days, I limited my smoking only to when I sit at the computer. When we go on vacation, I don't smoke and do rather fine. However, quitting in the home has been proving problematic.
Then there is the coffee with copious amounts of sugar. I used to be able to give up coffee with no ill effects, but this time it's a travesty. Because I'm up damn near every night with the little one, my morning pot has been very difficult to give up.
A few weeks ago I went cold turkey. That lasted until around 1 pm. I got a healthy dose of headache and various other aches. Woman came home for lunch and immediately told me how shitty I looked.
Tomorrow morning, I'm going to do my damnest to give it all up for good. After a few running starts, I am absolutely determined to do it for good once-and-for-all.
I've got plenty enough to do around here to try and keep me busy. For example, spending more quality time in the morning with the little one instead of sucking down a pot. I've got my giant rubberband and weights to play with. Not to mention getting a jump start on the spring cleaning.
My two biggest obstacles will be the computer and support. Everytime I talk about this kind of thing, Woman just looks at me funny. When it comes to this, she doesn't understand me and I don't understand her. And don't be surprised if I suddenly become lax with the PS threads that I'm currently involved in.
Cheers to recapturing the health that I had in my youth.
Wish me luck, so to speak.

I don't drink coffee, I don't smoke, I don't have any bad habits, but I don't do any kind of regular fitness as well. I am damn lazy for working out. My shape is not different than yours, I can jog for one kilometer, no more
I have already promised myself to start jogging, but never made it to be serious, constant, a way of life. I think I know how you feel.
My opinion is: it's in our head! We have to stick into our head (our mind) that this is important, this is the only way to go for a healthy life, when we get older, we have to understand that we are going to pay a high price for our laziness in the future if we don't do something now, or very very soon. They say it's never late to start taking care of our health, but that's a lie. If we wait too much, it _will_ be late.
Also, friends may help. Words may help. A bunch of other stuff may help. But nothing will help you if your mind and will is not strong enough and set to it, not determined to do so. Ultimately, it all depends on you and only you.
Unfortunately, I wasn't able, so far, to find my way, to find my strength to change myself. It'd be a small but very important change. I do hope you can do it and I do wish you can do it.

Whatever happens you can do it! But maybe not at the same time. So i suggest you to quit smoking first than later quit the coffee. One step at the time my friend. Remember when you were younger all the things you where able to do? They did not happen instantianous. You had to train for it, the more you trained and the longer you did the more you could do with you body until you felt you where almost a god. So stop the smoking first then slow down on the coffee. Right know you are 'trained' to smoke and to drink coffee.
Anyway i also stopped cold turkey with the smoking habbit. It made me feel miserable for over a week, my body had too adjust again and saw a chance to get rid off the nasty stuff inside. So i start coughing up slime(not him!) which came from my lungs. And i kept on spitting it out. yech.
But after that week i was feeling much better than in months before. I was lucky i could avoid places with smokers, i had no work and now money to go to the pub... also it was one off the worst weeks of my life so i figured "When i am able not to smoke this week i could quit for a long time, and when quiting for a long time i could quit forever" After that i sometimes "got the shakes" or went to the cigarette-shop without any reason. Then for a long time when i drunk a couple of beers with my pals i like to smoke just one ciggie this happend every 6 to 8 weeks. With the period in between getting bigger and bigger, and the ciggie thrown away earlier all the time.
Now i cannot remember my last cigaret.....
Maybe you think what a bullshit he is rambling about. But i just want to let you know it is possible.
So here are some tips:
1) Quit one day at a time, after about 10 days start thinking in weeks after a couple of weeks quit for a month.
2) Drink a lot of water (and keep going to the toilet) so you rinse the toxines out the body.
3) Eat healthy (lot's of vegetables and fruit) the vitamins (especially C) can help to breakdown the toxines.
4) Buy yourself a yoyo, there will be times you need to have something in your hand.
5) DO NOT reward youself with a ciggie.
6) DO NOT get angry at yourself when you smoke just one ciggie or had jus a little puff.
You need to reprogram you mind that is not easy.
7) DO NOT let yoouself get irritaded by thos people who still smoke in your surrounding
And a girlfriend told me she had her last cigaret in her purse for years, and each time she wanted to light it she held the cigarette for her face and spoke the mantra: "I am stronger than you, I am stronger than you, i really am".
After doing this she put the thing back in her purse.
Good luck.

Just have to put in my 2 cents worth, hard not to after spending a great number of years as a personal trainer:
Be sure and set yourself up for success, not failure. Don't try and accomplish everything at once. Set short term, achievable goals and put 100% into meeting each goal. Be sure and pat yourself on the back for each success. Give yourself a reward for reaching a goal...Revel in each and every achievement. Then, armed with a track record of success and confidence, move on to the next goal.
Determination is what allows us to define ourselves.....

I feel for you WarJ. I know what it's like. We are creatures of habit, it's up to the individual to ensure that the habit they have is a good one. Ciggies (i've been told) are harder to give up than heroin. I packed up smoking a good few years ago, and the advice given by Rinswind 2th (should that be 2nd?) holds true for my experience also.
I too have had many years training in the martial arts in the past, Shotokan karate, Jujitsu and Jeet Kune Do. But when I played a little kick about football with my nephew a few years ago, I was a wheezing red faced old wreck.
If you still have the martial art mentality, like I do, I found Tai Chi to be really helpful.
One thing to remember, vizualisation/imagination is stronger than will power IMO.
Still, having said all that, 'tis not an easy thing to do, but you start to benefit from the first hour of "your quest".

go for it. I felt the same way and tried to quit but put it off for 5 yrs! I started smoking in the mornings- thats what did it. I quit after my buddy's wedding. Been 2.5 years without any cigarettes.
Its possible, just hang in there- and remember cravings are only temporary (15 - 20 minutes) and eventually go away all together.
good luck. your body will love you for it.

Good WJ!
Although I don't smoke or drink coffee I do keep in shape. If you're serious about getting into the shape you once had, I suggest the Body For Life program. You'll find eating properly and exercising for about an hour a day much better for you then any of the fad diets.
If you want more information about this program feel free to ask. The book is inexpensive and the website is great. At first I was a little skeptical of his suggestion to purchase myoplex (which is from a company he owns) but I do find it to be much easier then eating six small meals.

You're perfectly right Rinswind 2th. I too have gotten used to seeing it and I see no reason for you to change. In fact, it's now tailored for you and you alone
WarJ, a couple of practicalities.
1) After only 5 to 7 days I believe that nearly all traces of nicotine are eliminated from your system. So any cravings you may feel are purely phycological.
2) You know yourself best. Take what you feel works better for you out of all the advice you see. There is no one best way.
I've just remembered that I got myself a set of Greek "worry" beads. Sorry I can't remember the correct name for them, they helped keep my hands busy. Get a sturdy set, heh, I went through 4 sets.
My thoughts are with you, you know you are on the right path.

Well, for me trying to quell my cigar addiction, I started sucking on Strawberry Pocky (japanese candy.) All I needed was something stick like in my mouth held down by my cigar tooth. Not really fattening and it tastes good. That is the only unhealthy habit of mine. I also work out too.

I wasn't expecting this much of a turnout. Thanks, everybody.
Was up at 7:15 this morning. Just past noon right now, and I'm feeling fine.
Got myself some finger food, like grapes and roasted nuts (not salted). And I think the V8 that I've been sucking down is helping as well. I could do with some celery, though.
Thought about getting vitamin C pills, but they do weird things to my body. As a matter fact, every supplement that I've taken since my teens has done weird things to me. Besides, citrus fruits is one of my cravings, so add oranges to the list when I get some celery. I had a bag of oranges last week and they didn't last too long.
Plus we are having a nice, warm day. The sun is shining and the snow is melting. Be spending some quality time outside today for the first time in months.
A little later today I will probably be drinking some Coca-Cola to take the edge off if it starts to get too bad.
Time to feed the kids lunch.
Yippie.
Again, thanks.

Quitting is for Sissies!
Lounging about, drinking pots of coffee, and smoking copious amounts of nicotine is only for real men. What's the matter? Your mommy wont let you smoke?
Jogging? Didnt that health freak... er... Spitz, or something.... die from a heart attack. The Atkins guy. The list goes on...
Dammit! Dont quit! It's a Vast Left Wing Liberalist Conspiracy. They want you to think they know whats best. They dont. They know nothing, smoking is good! Coffee is king! Dont sell out! Besides, are you really losing quality years? I mean sure you might live longer, but that just means you will drool on yourself for a couple extra years. Ooh, big fun there, right? Yeah, cant wait till I get to the age that I have to wear diapers again... that'll be fun. Pfft, anything that lets those yares end sooner seems like a blessing to me.
Light one up and kiss the drooling years goodbye... You'll be thankful you did.

First two days went absolutely fine. No headaches or pains or anything like that. Hell, I wasn't even uber grumpy.
Not to say that I didn't have problems, mind you. For some reason, my wrists and toes were constantly cold, while I was getting uber heat flashes at night. Not to mention the restlessness while trying to sleep. Then there is the "funny reality" that had set in. Kind of like mental tunnel vision or something. Fun stuff. Woman could have cut off her thumb while chopping brocoli and I would have laughed my ass off.
Then the baby got sick and was (still is) uber cranky. That, in turn, started to make me uber cranky due to what I'm going through. The last thing I need is to get uber frustrated with a sick toddler. I can deal with one of us, but both is a bad deal.
So I'm temporarily back to my old ways. Although, not as much as I used to. You know, just enough to keep my head level until I can unsettle it again, which will eventually lead to proper leveling.
On a slightly better note, my exercise is kind of starting to pay off. I'm starting to see a difference in my upper-body. I'm sore as Hell, but it's a good soreness.

I sense a very honest report there, good deal. Baby is priority, do doubt, but do watch the backsliding as it is easy to slip back into the all the old ways without even realizing it. Have you set a definite moment when you will switch back to the cold turkey routine? How long with the temporary reprieve last?
UC, LOL! Was that an attempt at reverse psychology?

If all goes well with the sick kid today and tonight, then I'll be cold turkey tomorrow morning. If not, then Thursday is my next best window.
Man, last few nights have been pure Hell. I'm ust complaining for a bit. Up unitl 1 am one night, then past 2 am the next. Last night she was up every hour just a bitching and screaming with fever.

She's getting 1/2 tbsp of kiddie Motrin twice a day. It does help a little bit, but not much when it comes to crankiness. Add to that how needy she is, and you've got a true monster. I know that kids are needy and dependant and all that, but this kid takes the cake, a bag of chips, and some french fries - even when she's not sick. I hope she grows out if soon and starts becoming more independent just like Big Sissy did. At around 4 years old, Big Sissy started getting herself breakfast and letting us sleep in. How cool is that?
