You know .. as I read the pages of the Ozone Technical forums (fora??) I am struck by the huge proportion of posts which are on the lines of --- "Hey I got a problem how do I fix it ...?" whilst on the other hand I am equally struck by the the tiny proportion of "Hey - Look what I just did/found/made which may be of interest to you" posts ...

Now we may all be wallflowers, or modest, or just think everyone else will snicker behind their hands because they're smarter than us ... but if we don't try it we'll never know will we ...

I for one have taken a lot from browsing this and one or two other forums, and I think it's probably the only way I can put back. I don't visit regularly enough to respond to queries, and apart from that, most queries are easily answered by the words "Did you Google it?" - and I'd prefer to give back something to those who helped me .. not the occasional helpless stranger ...

So how about it?? I'm game if you are .. Why don't we start to offer up a few more proactive posts on the technical forums rather than just provide answers.

Hear hear!!!

I am the first one to support the "help me" posts.

HOWEVER.
There are some things you should do first before posting.
Hell, not for bandwidth preservation nor protocols sake (doesnt seem to be much
in the way of that as LONG AS YOU DONT CAPITALISE!!!).

1) GOOGLE FOR IT.
Amazing thing google. Try it.

2) Invest the time into the fundamentals.
Dont ask a question like "How do I network two computers together".
Thats just plain fscking lazy. Do some homework.
Imagine coming up to some petrolheads and asking "So how do I put petrol in?".
You would be looked upon in mirth and deridement and chased out of the neighbourhood
for being a tard.

3) When you do ask question, let the helpers know you have already done some work
and are not just a lazy mofo.
You can ask; "How do I network two computers togeter, I dont have a crossover cable
and I cant afford to buy a hub."

4) For the love of god, dont post your homework questions.
Nothing sticks out more like a;
"I am designing a small business network, can you please help me design it?"
If you want help writing your essay say so.

Lastly, after all that remember; there is no silly questions, only silly people ;D

But seriously, if you show that your question is not frivolous, serious AND you have
already made an effort to research you are likely to get a much higher quality of anwsers.
The field experts will help you rather than the wannabees who want to show off their l33t skilz.

Peace.

I'd love to post some of the stuff I've made, but I dont have anywhere to stick it that doesnt give you aobut 1000 popups every time u enter it!

Eg, Iv just made
-a network-chat program in java (my first ever java proggy - yay!)
-a clever little 2d collision detections system - mathematically perfect bouncing spheres - yay!
-another 3d system (think its called clipping, dont really know, worked it out myself)
etc.

They're not anything special (and I wouldnt ever run my java program near any system that was connected to the internet for safety purposes , but if anybody could tell me anywhere to put them up, Id love to show you guys!

Answering questions is really a very easy way to share information. Most people don't know what to write about, and those few who are gifted and see a need to help by submitting their efforts. WarJournal is a great example of this. Weadah also put effort into this with his Mini-Tutorials and so many others have as well. It takes a lot of time to put teaching related materials togeather.

As for showing your own work, we have Sig Contests and people perform Wip, and there is also the the Speed Painting, and PS Pong, and site reviews. There are lots of places that people share. It is always nice to have more though. And you should continue to encourage people to share more and to write a tutorial when they have a good idea. Even when you answer a question you might ask the person who ask the question to add their question and answer to the faq.

It is true that google does provide a good way to answer most of the easy questions.

I have added to the google faq here. It might need some spell checking as everyone should know I can't spell for beans.

For the lack of searching part. I would reccomend have a stock response that is friendly and gives the user more advice than "Search google," as many people might not know how to do that.

Try this:

You question probably has an easy answer that you will be able to find by searching google. If you need more information about searching google try the :FAQ: search google for answers?

This might solve some of the google problems and curt answers without wasting much time.
