*insert moment of silence for Pugzly's (Pat's) plight*

Okay folks, I recently got engaged, and I am loving every minute of it. However, my fiance lives in Australia so I'm moving there in august or september most likely, specifically the city of Melbourne.

Does anyone have any idea if they have good offering for IT/Tech jobs there?

I think I've got enough qualifications since I've got 5 years with C/C++, over 6 years in network administration, Telecom experience (networking and database/billing systems), and a bunch of other Tech related fields.

Unfortunately, I never quite finished college (i.e. the usual story, did 3 years of a Computerl Science degree in Seattle but got kind of *cough* sidetracked.), but I have over 10 years of experience in the field.

Would I be able to talk my way into a job (with my qualifications) or would I need to get some kind of T.A.F.E. certificate or something just to get my foot in the door since I've been in the American system all my life?

Im a Systems Admin with 17 years of experience.

Generally, you can get a job without any qualifications.
IF you ever get to the interview stage and can talk the talk.
Thats if you want to be support, programmer or some other shitkicker like that.
Higher paid jobs usually need some sort of qualification.

However, the market is very stagnant at the moment.
There are a lot of IT people without jobs.

So unless you are a real hotshot or prepared to work for peanuts, be prepared to live off your fiance for a while

Thanks Wulfius.

I'm not willing to work for peanuts since it's hard to go back to *shudder* tech support or other shitkicker jobs when you're used to being higher on the org chart, and I have a bit too much pride to live of my fiance, hehe.

I guess it looks like I'll be working security (read: bouncer) with my future brother-in-law until I can get a decent job or some pieces of paper saying I actually know what I say I know.

But, if any of you come to the city, I could probably sneak you into the VIP line. That oughta be worth a few coolpoints, hehe.

Thanks Skaarj, sounds great.

We might even be able to partake in a cup of coffee together, mate. I've always wanted to meet one of the Asylumites in person. My shout, no worries, hehe.

I'll let you guys know when I get more details on exactly where in Melbourne I'll be.

hey silence,

the IT industry has quietened down in australia quite a bit, but the fact remains - there are still jobs going for people who know their stuff. However, I'm a sydneysider, so i'm not 100% sure on the melbourne situation really.

Drop me an email if you're around sydney, though, and we'll catch up.

Hey Silence,
Like Skaarjj, you're coming to my part of the woods to. I go to Uni in Melbourne, Im glad you're coming to Melbourne instead of Sydney (everyone seems to go to Sydney when moving from overseas *thumbs down*). Best of luck with the job searching!

Okay, Skaarj, hehe. He seemed pretty coherent though.

And thanks everybody for the feedback. I'll let you guys know when I finally make the move. I visited Melbourne for a couple of weeks and it was a nice place. The city was a bit crazy since it looks like nobody sleeps there, but the nightclubs weren't too bad. I just wasn't used to them being open all night.

The security thing should keep me going until I can get a job so I'm not worried about supporting myself while looking for a job, but I'd rather be working in my field.

I've got some family in Sydney and Brisbane so I might be visiting those areas and, like I said, I'd love to meet some of the Asylumites in person over a cup of coffee, or your beverage of choice, caramel machiatto comes to mind...mmmm. Seattle spoiled me on the whole coffee thing.

OFF TOPIC:

Speaking of cool nightclubs in Melbourne, any recommendations?

I am going there for a few weeks and I would like to go to a cool club.
Somewhere to dance, cool Techno DJs and atmosphere.

Dont try to send me to a Gay or SM club for a gag guys
I will verify the recommendations

Thanks.

The Mercury Lounge or Barcode in the Crown Complex is usually a good place to start, or there's Wild Bill's in Southland, or Brass Monkey at Fountain Gate (although that's technically not in Melbourne), or there's a good piano bar just across from that called Howl at the Moon

Yeah, the Crown Complex is awesome. Just try not to lose all your money at the casino. I kinda splurged at the BlackJack tables.

Also, on Bourke Street downtown there's a club called Chicane that I went to that was pretty good. They have techno on Saturdays I believe and it's got a pretty good atmosphere. They even have live bands playing sometimes on the top floor.

There's also Evolution (no idea where it is, but a good cab driver should know) that has hip-hop and R&B, but it gets really packed sometimes.

Congrats on the engagement and good luck on the move Slience. It'll be good to have another long standing member of the asylum down under. I'd also have to agree that the amount of IT & Design related jobs is in a bit of a low at the moment, but from what I see, Melbourne isn't any where near as bad as Brisbane -- which is in such a poor state that you can usually count the number of *decent* positions on the fingers of one hand, excluding your thumb.

Yet I do know quite a few people in the IT industry with reputable jobs positions that have never completed any kind of tertiary qualification. Experience speaks louder than words or in many cases fancy pieces of paper. If worst comes to worst, you could try brown nosing up to some of the local Melbourne Universities to see if you can get an honorary undergraduate degree or diploma (might want to give that a go before you leave the US too, can't hurt to try).

*drool*?

I'll be heading down that way some time this year. Can't really say when, it depends on how my $$$ goes and weather or not I decide to display at one of the upcoming new media exhibitions down that way. Yet with the current state of affairs that isn't going to be likely. At worst, I'll be heading down around x-mas time to visit my relatives, and possibly do a little job hunting as I will have graduated and the design industry is Brisbane is kinda dead. I'd like to work in another city for a year or two and seeing as Sydney kinda rubbed me the wrong way (Sorry Sydney-siders, it's a nice city but just not to my liking), Melbourne is next on my list.

Anyways, given that the majority of Asylumites from Australia live in Melbourne, perhaps we can schedule some kind of mini Asylum Down under meet & greet event if we have enough interest?

Just a passing thought.

Edit: Crap, seeing Silence's username got me thinking about the good ol times and I didn't pay a single thought when entering my old username in to reply... My Bad.

But living in Melbourne is too way expensive than in Brisbane, that's for sure.
But good luck Silence on your journey to "DOWN UNDER"!
