I'm not familiar with how dual or more monitor set-ups work, but could I have a game running and be working in say adobe at the same time? My friend told me I have to have 2 video cards and just run the 2nd monitor through the 2nd video card and it's that simple

Yes, but that being said your performance will seriously suffer. Particularly running those two kind of apps. Running a game and a text editor or something isn't a big deal. You can also in some games take advantage of 2 monitors. Usually flight and mech sims.

You have 2 choices, a second video card (your friends comment is correct, it is that simple) or there are dual head video card ( Not recommending site but it had a shitload of examples )

One downfall is that the second card will have to use the PCI bus (unless you have a mobo with 2 AGP slots and I don't know of any off the top of my head) which is slower than your AGP. So if you do it, run the game on the AGP card/monitor and PS on the other.

The game I would be running is asheron's call which doest take a whole lot of memory to run compared to like morrowind or something like that. I have the origonal graphics card that was in it, and i got a few extra slots in the back of the box i think. I would want to run the game on the good card with an el-cheapo monitor and PS on the other card to my current monitor. I'm running a 1.8ghz p4, with 512ram, and my good card is a 64mb geforce2, im not sure what the other one is. Do you think I could do it without much trouble?

Slots in back? or slots in the mobo?

Now you probably have slots left so it's just a matter of installing a second card to run the second monitor/workspace. But since you're going to need to open up the box to install a second card, open the box to check

It's really fairly simple. Just to make sure however, what OS are you running? I think everything greater than win 98SE runs multiple monitors out of the box.

Asheron's call run's 'full screen' doesn't it?

Then it will probably minimize itself every time you switch over to ps - and you gain nothing.
At least that's how every game does it on my setup. Hit alt-tab to get to photoshop (since the games always trap the mouse as well) - and no longer you have a game on screen.

I have a 2 monitor GeForce4 Ti 4600 at home and a 3 monitor Matrox Parhelia at work.

If a game works in full screen most will fold in multiple screens unless they can do the resolution (few do).
You can play it in a windowed mode easily.

Multiscreens work best when you use multiple panes/dialogues/programs.

Oh. You can do multiple screens with a couple of older video cards (1AGP,1PCI) using newer windows OS.
It sucks the big hairy one.

I would hardly call windows 98 'newer', you know.

Well, since I updated to 2000 fairly recently from 98SE, I call it newer

asheron's call runs in windowed mode with no problems, so that might be the answer

nvidia allows the use of multiple desktops so is it possible to run multiple desktops, one on each card? Or am I just rambling??

Perfect timing. I'm just about to try setting up dual monitors. Just have to determine which of my old vid-cards will work best.

I tried last night, and I don't have another slot for a graphics card. My friend told me I might be able to run 2 monitors from the same card but I'm not sure. Could I possibly run an addition desktop to my tv? its only got a coax though

Go to the website from your card manufacturer and look for the specific type you have. There will be your answer you could also find the things (splitter plug) you need for a two monitor setup.
I wonder what kind of computer you have which has only one slot for your graphics card. Yes most computers have only one AGP Slot (brown or black) but most computer mainboards have a couple off PCI slots (white) which could be used for some graphics cards.
So either you have a strange computer or all your PCI slots are filled otherwise plug an graphics card in the PCI slot and have fun. You might have some troubles finding an PCI graphics card. But google or ebay are here to help you.
