Hey guys... just wondering if there is any decent place that offers really low cost webspace? I did find one provider by the name of Webzone. $12 per year for 100 megs of hosting, hotlinking allowed, 1 gig of bandwidth... It looks promising, but if there is anything better out there, I would like to know.

Just keep in mind, you get what you pay for. I currently pay $4.95/month through WebHost4Life. While they are by no means the best, the price is right on target with the quality and dependability I recieve. Of course, I use ASP.NET for a lot of stuff, so I am sorta tied to windows hosting.

Wolfen: it depends on what you need. PHP/MySQL? ASP.NET? or just a storage for files?
i would recommend http://www.wickedidodai.com

No php or anything like that, just a chunk of bandwidth and hotlinking. Enough for a basic portfolio site. I set up my stuff real basic.

Actually, I'm looking for some affordable webspace as well. I need a decent amount of storage and bandwidth, as well as PHP/MySQL and CGI, but none of that ASP.NET and other stuff. Any recommendations?

And apologies to Wolfen for hijacking this thread.

You could try out http://www.prohosting.com. I'd have to say one of the best hosts out there.

I'm actually looking for a decent webhost too - Ideally I wanted another 'sponsor' since I hate paying and like my community projects to not cost me anything other than time.

Sponsorship is hard to find tho, and whilst my current host is letting me use it's servers for free I would like something a little better (they gave me everything basically, but their implementation of .htaccess is weird and I can't do anything except set the default index page for a folder - if I try anything else it puts the entire server down, not a crash, since as soon as I remove the .htaccess file it is fine, but my page and all the others peoples pages, all virtually hosted, disappear when I try to do anything at all - I have checked the syntax with loads of people and it is fine - the hosting is just odd)

But anyway that is why I need a new host and as cheaply as possible with support for cgi, php and mysql, and on a linux apache box.

I'm thinking about www.34sp.com who seem to be great, just wonderign of any other solutions - Ideally I'd liek a UK based host since that is where I am and if you have to make a phone call it is nicer not to have to ring another country.

Sorry for hijacking the thread too, but it is all the same deal so maybe a permanent section can be made about webhosts and people's experiences?

I personally hate www.oneandone.co.uk and do not recommend them, they aren't that cheap and their customer service is appalling, to transfer my domain to another company it took them a month to release it and I had to call them multiple times, email them loads, use the online changing service twice and threaten them with writing to web magazines and getting nominet (the uk domain 'controller') to step in for me which they will do if things aren't sorted within a reasonable time (a few days!).

Sorry to go on, but just avoid them.

I`ve used Aletia Hosting for a few years and aside from a mailbox problem, they have been virtually (hehe) problem free.

Following a tip from here, I signed with 1&1 a deal that gives me 3 years of free webservice, with 500MB of space, emails, and a lot of other features. Very interesting at first sight.
But, indeed, the only time that I needed support so far, it was pretty useless, incompetent.
I didn't cancelled my account because it is a free account. If I had to pay _one_ miserable dollar per year for such service, I'd refuse.
But, since it's free, let it be.

The free 1&1 thing was oneandone.com which was the american branch I think, my dealings were with the uk branch so I can't comment on the service of the other. But I can believe the support was useless.

Thanks Mas, I will probably be giving them a go unless something else amazing turns up.

If you are looking for cheap I like the do it yourself method. Use your standard internet connection to be your web server, database and nameserver. You can even do this on windows, you don't have to be a mac person. This is how I am currently running my site. I pay the 9 USD for the domain name and everything else comes from my computer, and the monthly bill I pay for my internet connection.

WM, what's your ISP that accepts you to run a server?
Usually they don't.

Warmage: Wish I could go that route but there are several problems....

1. No server software.

2. Only have 2 OLD Macs here...

3. Live with parents. Dad pays for internet service, and his laptop is the only computer on the internet.

4. No job. (I am lookin though!)

5. Not much money, as in less than $50. (See #4)

So I am in a bit of a pinch... It bites.

How much does it cost to have a pc running 24/7? and how workable is a half meg broadband service for serving files?

Just wondering if a home server is any good.

Although from what I read all .com/.net/.org type domains require at least two servers.

Plus with virus and security requirements I guess it's best to leave it up to the "pros" lol.

I am using Roadrunner, which has recently changed their TOS to allow you to run servers at your own risk.

The software is available, for all operating systems. I am not sure what version of Mac you are running. I am assuming old is before OSX which might put you in peril of not finding free software.

You do not need 2 DNS servers. It is just a good idea to have a master and a slave server. I am not all that concerned about that issue, because if my master server goes down so does my web server anyways, it is the same box.

You can always do a google search for something like "mac web server" or "mac name server"

I hear you that this might not be the best option, but it can be a very cheap options.
