OK, here I am with IE5.1 for the mac (newest version BTW). Hmm, the clipping on that drunken sidebar is really broken, it only shows about 300 pixels tall, and while it appears to move, it's only a matter of moments before the part that's swooping past the clipped area gets duplicated about 50 times, I'll try and do a screencap for you... I'll just do this as a link to the image, it's kinda tall for the forum.

Now on to the ext browser, back in a sec!

Oh wow! It nearly works on Netscape 4.72 on the Mac, I didn't really expect that. Here the menu starts too low, and as you move the mouse down the screen, iot still won't show the bottom of the menu.

OK, back on my PC. I'll avoid the cross-platform issues and just look at the unit itself, as it's intended to be. Hmm, what can I say? I can't really say that I like it that much - too "swoopy" for me, really hard to make the links sit still long enough to click, and made me kind of seasick! ;-) Now just to let you know, I *do* think it's cool, and actually made something vaguely similar long ago, it is nice to cram a lot of links into one menu space. I think I'd like to see a better way to close it down, maybe make that whole side edge the 'clickable' link, maybe (since we're already tracking the mouse) or make it minimize if you go too far to the right. Maybe just bringing your mouse real far to the left would make it open, and moving out of it's 'opened' width would make it close. I'd also like to see the open/close animation go faster, and make sure that it could do both at the same time - open and follow the mouse up and down; now I can make it "jump" really far by moving my mouse down while it's opening (it's not following me), and then when it's fully open it snaps to where it should have gone.

Woo! Get all that? I like it in concept, now it just needs some usability work done too it, to make it more intuitive.

Hmm, "drunken". I believe the tenses of the verb go like this; "I drink, you drank, we got drunk, what is that drunken fool doing with the lampshade on his head?" Always easier to understand these words in context, heh. ;-)

I think the effect is caused mostly by the 1-to-1 relationship of the movement of the sidebar to the onMousemove event. When the mouse is moved quickly, the menus movement gets too 'jerky'. Are you updating the position onMousemove right now? I'd consider just getting the X/Y values on mousemove, and updating the positions on a setInterval, this way we could get a smoother transition from one place to another. You could also set the open/close values on this same interval, so both movements could happen at the same time. You'll end up with a slightly higher CPU hit, but the experience will be better IMHO.

Oh please, don't feel small at all, I still do this all the time without thinking, and then end up changing it around afterwards, heh. I always have a problem with the onMousemove function, it catches more than I really want it to, and I can watch my CPU usage shoot through the roof! I've been wondering about maybe catching it on an interval, and then turning it off, then on again at the next interval, might save CPU, might not? Too much depends on the processor speed this way, I know I'm probably catching the X/Y values a dozen times for each time I actually use the values in my interval, this could be an interesting way of optimizing, eh? (I just thought of this, and haven't done *any* tests yet.) My mouse-following scripts I stall the movement off even further, having it only go halfway to where the script says it should go each time, makes things even smoother, but not as responsive. This is the area where lots and lots of tweaking are involved, you'll have fun getting it just right! :-)

Hay, I was just looking over this again and I might have noticed a small bug....

When you view the site in a non maxamized window and you make the window height rather small (say 400/500 pixels) I get a problem. When the mouse reaches the bottom of the window there's still a fair chunk of the menu that you can't get at.

I've only been able to check this in IE6 as I havn't gotten around to installing any other browsers yet.
