I've asked for such script before at the Ozone and I believed somebody presented one to me. It did work however everything withing the layer also changed opacity to whatever the transparency of the layer was...

I was looking for something more like www.oakley.com where in the nav there when you hover over one of the categories the drop down is transparent over the rest but not the text.... I was thinking this had more to do with DHTML rather that the opacity of the layer itself.

Here are a couple. Try the Brother Cake menu, I know you can change the opacity of it. The Milonic menu has some really cool features so check that one out too.

Actually I think the menu opacity on the oakley site is a bit of a trick. I'm pretty sure all they are doing is using a 4x4 gif as the background image for the dropdown menu. The gif alternates 1px color 1px transparent
kinda like so:

by doing so it gives the illusion of opacity without really using any filters or anything.

There's also another, quite simple way of having non-transparent content in front of a semi-transparent background:

Create two <div>s, one with the background only and one with everything else. Now if you place the second layer exactly on top of the first one, you can change the background layer's opacity seperately without influencing the content layer's appearance.

Bitdamaged? how can that be achieved in Ps5 ? i can achieve that opacity illusion to .psd but when i try to export the file to *.gif or somesuch, it loses the effect. I have a plain Ps5 with no special filters (call me a purist if you want ). I have heard that it has something to do with the alpha-levels or something. true?

Hi Malaresian, welcome!

You can create such a gif like this:

1.) Create a new image, 2x2 pixels with a transparent background

2.) Fill the top left and lower right pixel with the color you want to appear semi-transparent

3.) Export it as a gif with enabled transparency and use it as background for <div>s, tables and everything you want and everything behind it will partly visible through it.
