I have a problem, I have the choice of presenting a 360 degree image with either a downloadable plugin, or with as a java applet. The problem is, the java presentation looks better so I'd like to do it with that, but since IE left out java in v6 I'm kinda screwed there, people don't always (more accurately, almost never) want to download and install java.

You see the conundrum. What I'd like to do is offer the applet as a default but have a redirect to the plugin version page if the browser is not java enabled. Can anyone get me rolling on this detection, or offer another solution that I may not have considered?

We have done so.

Thanks man, I knew that java would get your attention

Actually, If I remember correctly, IE6 will return true with that even if you don't have a JVM installed. I think I discoved that when I was testing out my old JS library when I first upgraded to XP.

I might be wong but it'd be a good idea to test it in browsers/machines that don't have Java just to be sure.

Out of the poeple that are likely to read this?

Probably nobody.

Unless someone has just done a clean install of w2k or xp... Anyone running XP with service pack 1 (which should be everyone) has Java.

Seriously though, I wouldn't worry about it too much. From what I remember of using IE without a JVM, if you end up on a page with a Java applet you get a little pop-up dialouge asking if you want to download Java... But it's a bit of a download for us stonage peoples still surf'n on copper wires.

Be sure to post a link to those VR photos when your done with em though, should be sweet.

Ay, very nice. Man, I want some more of them caffeinated peppermints. (It's virus free btw)

I assume the Java Applet you'll be using will be made by iPIX too?... If so then is should be a great addition to the site. Even without instructions it only took me a couple of seconds to get comfy with the controls, which is really good for anything that's 3D'ish and mouse driven.

Oh and your photography skills rock, stop underrating yourself

Best of luck with it.
