okay this one is stumping me
ive made this night sky effect which i quite like for a backdrop for a site banner
now have a look at it
http://www.gatecentral.net/artist/WoWgate/blue-sky.jpg

it appears to be blotchy doesnt it
except when i look at it on my computer i dont see this problem
it appears nice and smooth with good shadowing

what's going on?
i do save for webpage.
i've tried saving it as a gif and a jpg on the highest quality settings and still the same problem

ps.
to make the effect i made a regular star background.
black fill with white stars
and then i overlayed that at (i think 15% cant remember exactly w/o opening ps) over a layer of cloude made by using a sort of... i guess you would call it stale blue and black.

Night Sky?!?!?!?

Well as for the blotchy... did you do it on purpose? Looks like a fog, or a nebula or the nothern lights... ish

Maybe you should clip a piece of your photoshop file and post it here and we can all look at it to see if we get the same problem.

As for the stars... Try looking at: http://www.exumweb.net/articles/graphics/psstars
or http://www.pk.darkhorizons.org/

I'm sure others have good links on making a stary sky.

I'm going to guess that the color depth for your monitor is set at 16 bit color?

There is a problem that develops when the browser tries to render an image with gradients at 16 bit color - it chokes slightly and you get banded splotchy looking graphics.

If possible, set your color depth to true color. If not...there's a post around somewhere in which warjournal and dracusis offer some advice for helping reduce the effect...trying to find it....

{edit - here we go....

And BTW, it doesn't look 'blotchy' on my machine...looks pretty smooth. Looks like a cloudy noght sky with a lot of artificial light interference...
On the other hand, it looks like an underwater scene as well...

thanks DL-44 that fixed everything =)
i didnt even think it would be my monitor because when i was working on it in PS and viewing it with acdsee the problem didnt occur but did when viewed with my browsers =\

strange why it does that.

and yes im going to remove the lights
i put them there because im still working on the shading
it has to be darker though for what im going for.

i never would of thought of that either (ima greenass)...fact is i've scrapped several projects for the same reason. don't know why i was set on 16 bit--maybe a game i was playing or something and forgot to change it back. anyway, thanks DL.
