I am trying to make a logo using my name and unfortunatly it looks jagged. I have looked aroung the web at different tutorials but I just can't seem to make the edges smooth as in the logo above. Can anyone point me in the right direction i.e. website/tutorial. TIA Traci

are you having issues when your making the graphic, or are you having issues when saving the graphic for the web (.gif for example and jaggies)

can you post an example?

I wait keenly for the response as I have having the same teething troubles while trying to save seamless tranparent images for the web.

The jagged text could be a basic problem. Your anti-aliasing could be turned off.

(if you can't see the image, type http://www.angelfire.com/tn2/vancil/crisp.jpg into the address bar)

If your anti-aliasing is set to "none" then Photoshop will only use one color to make your text. If you select one of the other options Photoshop will buffer the text with semi-transparent pixels.

If it looks fine in Photoshop before you save and you're saving it as a GIF you might not be using enough colors. Your text might look pretty bad with under 10 colors, especially if you have lots of colors elsewhere in the image.

I might be way off but this could potentially help so I'm posting it.

Transparency is another issue. First off, you must save your image as a GIF if you want transparency. A jpg does not support it. The easy way to make sure you have a transparent image?

1. Make sure your image is not on a layer called "Background" (rename if needed)
2. Select everything you want to be in your image.
3. Select --> Inverse
4. Delete
5. Save

There are other ways but this should be pretty straightforward.

EDIT - Stupid spelling

There are two diff. bg colors on the Asylum, a darker redish/purpleish color and a light redish/purpleish color. (I'm not good with names) Get the RGB values from both of them; average them; and make the new color your eyedropper color.
Now when you are done with your logo, go to file>save for web. Make your image a GIF. In the settings dialog, look to the right and you will see "Matte" with a drop down box right next to it. Chnage "none" to "eyedropper color".

Just for the record, the median color is #2B0404 or RGB(43,4,4).

Well I went and created a number of new gifs. I like the idea of changing the matt, I did increase the number of colors used tot 30 and I tried elarging the image and theen using th gaussian blur of 2 then reducing the image. I am not sure that it has changed. How does the Asylum image come out so smooth?

You mean the logo at the top of the page? It is smooth b/c there isn't a transparent bg. The asylum blue is already on the image. . .

I'm not sure its possible to do a blur like that and still have it be transparent. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

I tried my best to recreate the Asylum blur effect on a transparent bg.
