I have checked out the website (fantastic resource by the way!) and can see that almost anything can be turned into a believable texture. It is explained in http://www.handson.nu/HTML/lightFX4.shtml that one of the images was created by applying a "Cloud" filter on the mask, and then darkening the edges. |

I have tried to follow the tutorial and as a Layman am lost when trying to generate the same textured mountain effect shown on the tutorial page. |

Go back to here: www.handson.nu and start with the Lighting Effects 1 tutorial. Then do the 2nd Lighting Effect tutorial, then the 3rd, then thr 4th. After you've completed all of those tutorials you should know how to do it, the tutorials are numbered 1 2 3 and 4 for a reason, because the later tutorials assume you've done the earlier ones and don't bother explaining certain parts in full. |
