This is my first watercolor painting in over 10 years. It was a birthday present for my daughter

Originally 10x14 inches
It's obviously too late for advice to be acted upon, but I am interested in your thoughts/critiques/etc...

Not much of a critique here because I think it's lovely! The only thing I would suggest is possibly more detail next time round but that's only if you're into it. The loose watercolour style looks very good to me as is. Nice one

yup, that was my immediate thought, detail, specifically textures! But yes, is nice.

It's not too late either unless you fixed it with some kinda treatment or something

:/

the texture is a bit more apparent in the real version. much of it is on the subtle side though.

I did intentionally keep it rather loose though. My biggest problem always used to be adding *too much* detail

Need to find that balance....

Thanks =)

somethin I meant to say (children distract) was the sharp-lined shadows on the rightmost 2 shells are throwing it off the most I bet. I bet if those 2 shadows weren't there it would come together better overall and wouldn't being asking so loudly for details.

sorry about the fragmented ideas, that's my life lately =)

Very nice. You might catch on to this *art* thing. Stick with it.
Nice turtle variety, too. Obvoiusly a forward thinking turtle school.

And my birthday is coming up ....~cough~

I like the loose style - it gives it a nice allaround soft feel - me thinks.

Still mulling over what Jason said about the shadows ...

The shadow on the red one I outright botched. Things just didn't work like they were meant to. I may be able to fix that up a bit still.

Overall though, I disagree about the sharpness of the shadows. Again, some of this isn't translating well from the scan....I'll have to see if I can fix it up a little.

Just to add a little more background -

My intent was to keep this rather loose. I wanted to maximize the depth and the general impression of what the objects were. The shadow and reflection of the log on the water, the cast shadows of the turtles particlarly the rihgt-most one), the texture and depth I got on the log itself, and all without getting too caught up in detail are the things that make me happy.

The botched shadow on the large turtle's shell, the lack of depth on the smallest turtle, the lack of realism in the water are the things I see as flawed.
I wanted to keep the water 'light' and 'pretty' and colorful but would have preferred it come across as having more depth. I'll have to work on reflections on the water next go 'round.

I appreciate the feedback, and look forward to more. =)

Having not touched watercolors in 10 years, I am pretty pleased with this. I also see how far I have to go still

I really like it, DL, especially the bit where the water is coming /over/ the turtle. Genious.

Oooh..Pretty!

Congrats on using watercolors, those things can be a bitch, but, I really like it.

I also like how it's not detailed.
