Hi guys, I'm new to both these forums, and Photoshop itself...
I'm sorry to trouble you experts but i need some SERIOUS help with this.
Questions need to be answered and i was hoping maybe you guys could help me out.
My aim sn is bpo69 and I'm on quite a bit.
Well if noone does seem to help me out through AIM, maybe you guys could help me figure something out.
1. When i create multiple layers, it won't allow me to access other layers, the screen stays the same so i don't get to use layers
2. If I get this fixed, how are layers used?

#1Pham#1: Welcome. Interesting first post but I'm not sure you have provided enough information. What are you trying to do? Can you upload a PSD which you are having trouble with?

For your second query check out the buttons at the bottom of the page and search Google for 'photoshop layer tutorials'

I'm sure a more competent inmate will be along to help in a while

Layers are more or less like sub-image within the image itself. it can be floating over the 'background' (the base image), transparency and many merge methods. They are one of the most useful thing of PS, so i recommend you to learn to use them.

Hello and welcome 1Pham#1
My suggestion for your dilemma is the same as the ^above^. It's hard to put into words what you are trying to achieve visually I know. So post up a pic' or a link to the psd so we can beeter see to help you.

Sometimes it`s easier to think of layers as transparent sheets laid over one another.
For a layer to be editable, it has to be *active*. The active layer will be highlighted in the Layers Palette (Window>>Layers [PS 7] , Window>>Show Layers [PS6]). To activate a Layer, click on it.

Can you see the layers ? Is the one you wish access to active ?

could it be that you have several layers but the upper layers are opaque so when you select the lower layers you cannot see the changes being made? if this is the case, select the layer you wish to work on, then click the eye icon on the layers above it to make them invisable. you should now see any changes you make to your selected layer

docile what you said is EXACTLY what i meant...
Too bad my friend showed me how to manipulate layers before i read up on these forums again...
I've just made 2 new backgrounds... I think they look pretty decent... Big files though, i save all my pics as psd and bmp
I've only started learning Photoshop and it may take more time to get better...
I've also downloaded Eye Candy...The full version ... Thank god for serials!
Any other suggestions or helpful programs?

Experiment with Jpg compression, so you can get high quality in low filesize.

That and read all ps faqs around here

To keep the dear Doc (the one who hosts, owns and pays for this forum) out of trouble, we don't talk about illegal activities here. No serials, no downloads.. use it if you wish, but it's a don't ask/don't tell thing here.

And relying solely on filters is not a good idea. Naturally, it gives a pretty nifty effects when you just start out, but it holds no artistic merit whatsoever, and anyone can see which filters you used. Also, when you get to the phase "how do I make a graphic which looks like X" you'll have to have to know photoshop a little to get in the right direction. After reading the documentation a little (if applicable) doing some tutorials (the buttons on the bottom of this page are a good start) will give you much more a grasp on the program than just randomly messing around with filters does.
