Topic awaiting preservation: Larger physical image? (Page 1 of 1)

I'm just beginning to learn Photoshop, so please laugh only a little at my silly questions (more to come surely)! Here we go:

I have started to make a pic and now I want to extend the area, i e I want more space down and up. If I change the size of the picure the image gets stretched out proportionally... I could of course make a new one with other measures and paste what I have done into it, but that seems very unprofessionally. What do I do?

Probably there won't be a very good way to do this without causing the image to be pixelated. If you aren't too far into the creation process you might just start over.

I like to start my images a bit larger than what I really want. That way I can always size down later.

How much bigger are you trying to make it?

It is now about 650 pixels wide, but I want it more like 800. It's not really a big deal, I just thought there must be a way to do it.

When you want to resize something like that its best to do it slowly, in increments of 5-10%.

So for a 650 to 800 pixel upsize I'd use.

650 -> 682
682 -> 716
716 -> 751
751 -> 788
788 -> 800

When you do that, make sure that "Resample Image" is selected at the bottom of the Image Size dialog and that you use the "Bicubic" method.

And to elucidate : Go Image>>Canvas Size to extend the *playing area* of a document. The little box of arrows below let you choose in which direction.
