I wrote up a tutorial on low opacity painting last night as it's something I struggled with when I first picked up my wacom. Can't remember which one of you told me about low opacity brushes - but thanks

Thought I'd make up a walkthrough for others who are new to digital painting.

Nice tutorial there, the finished result is great. But I gotta say ..
the man himself said on forums.sijun.com a long time ago never to use soft brushes and smudge tools, you save a lot of time but you loose depth. I have to say this was the best advice for me at the time of reading and won't go back.. sure I use soft brushes and the smudge tool now and again, but mostly to loose depth/accuracy where needed. Quick strokes of a hard not so opaque brush will do the same trick and better most times.

nice tones on the skin btw, thats something I'd have trouble with.

No smudge tool for me either. It just ruins things and you can tell when someone has used it because their paintings are usually swirly.

Glad the pics work now, I guess the site is in transition.

I'm sure I use Smudge more than most around here. Someone whispered into my ear to turn Spacing off when using the Smudge tool. That's what I do and I find it makes the Smudge tool more functional than with Spacing turned on. I also set the Opacity anywere between 20-50.

I did a little bit of playing, Amer, and I'm kind of liking it. Time will tell how it fits into my style.

BTW, caught a post by you at CGTalk. Good to see you over there in the PS forums.
FYI, I'm Stroker over there (and a few other forums).

I don't really like painting tutorials, at all... Most of them regulate how you have to paint something. For example, you have a tut specifically for an eye and soon enough all your eyes look like that, and you learned how to paint them at a different angle in which you intended...

I think the best way for people to learn how to paint straight up is to get PS (or painter mind you) open and fool around, try new shit. References work wonders for realism. And if you know a particular artist that you'd like to learn from, ask them how they paint to certain things, shadow/light, texture, proportion, etc. Most of them will tell you that they use references.

And I'm not saying that I don't like tutorials, they can be very useful in learning. I have a select few that were really helpful for me. But for the most part, I learned what I know (which is shit by the way), from just messin' around.

I'm giving your smudge technique a go Warjournal and it's working for me ok. I'm still pushing the colours around a bit even with low opactiy and shading turned off but I can see that your way could be effective if I play with it a little. I'll give it a try and see how it goes so thanks for the tip. Something new to add to the arsenal.

I lurk at CG talk all the time, I love that place. Some of the 3D stuff is amazing.

Cool Insider, tutorials aren't for everyone

Well, I mean, I hope I didn't come off as rude or intolerant. That's just my opinion on tutorials. By all means people, feel free to attempt to paint by a tutorial... You may get more out of it than me. That's just how I like to learn.

Like 6++ months ago, painting tuts were useful for me. Why? I did not know that for painting a drawing the best would be having your lineart layer at top with multiply mode (i never messed with layer combining methods before, it was like whoah for me back in that time). Time passed, and my best learning tool was observation. i still get problem with multiple lightsources, tho.

Btw, i also visit CGTalk as well. I havent checked it since some time, bu i frequently check the cgnetworks gallery and dl stuff.

BTW, am i the only one who never uses a 'pallete' for my paintings (you know, like thos color dots to see what the base color was)? I have always liked more to pick the color that would suit me best, i think that why i am too colorful =P. I do use pallets for oekakis tho.

OPACITY SETTINGS

Only because it's not been mentioned and some may not know.

You can on the fly easily change the opacity of brushes etc. using either the keypad or the numbers across top of your keyboard. press 1 you get 10% 2=20% 3=30% and so on... the only catch is opacity below 10% so you simply enter a 'zero' plus the number 05=5% 09=9%.

For us lefties using the keypad is mucho mucho effecient. Mouse or the stylus do not have to leave the deck.
