Topic awaiting preservation: Help W/ Effects (Page 1 of 1)

I know it can be done, but i'm not sure how to do it. I need to learn how to take a picture and remove all the color except for in certain things. for example, a wedding picture and the entire picture is in black and white, except for the bouquet which is still in full color

any help would be appreciated. thanks guys

Adjustment Layer > HSB
Bring Saturation all the way down
Paint in parts that you want to retain colour

MMH - though warjournal's answer may sound like it's less than you're aksing, it is in fact exactly what you need to do.

If you need more info on adjustment layers, go to the Gurus Network (link at the bottom of the page here) and find the tutorials section - then Photoshop, then 'backdoors' by Steve. The time spent reading it will be well rewarded, and should fill in any blanks in wj's advice.

Cant you also draw clip paths around the items you want to save and Greyscale the rest? Of course you'd have to turn the path into a selection. But wouldnt that be a bit easier?

Or Greyscale the whole document, then switch back to CMYK or RGB, then paint on a NEW layer. Another option. Am I on track here people?

Yes, you could.

I find the adjustment layer method both easier and more flexible.

Once the adjustment layer is made, you can alter which areas are effected simply by painting an area in white or black. If you can't get an exact enough line with the panitbrush, you can still make a path and convert to a selection and fill with whit eor black.

I'd go the lazy route which would be to duplicate the layer and desaturate the bottom one. Then I'd erase everything on the top layer except the flowers. No painting involved

I always forget about the History Brush. Hmm, maybe I should use that more. LOL

convert to greyscale, then paint over the areas you want to color with the history brush. There's always a simpler way :P

Couldn't you use the sponge tool and desaturate the areas where you don't want color?

Though, I like the other suggestions as well.

Whew, good timing there....only two months later with the same suggestion

Of course, as I said, there are tons of ways to do this, but adjustment layers are almost always a better bet. Flexible, editable, etc.

Or just duplicate the color layer, desaturate it completely, then erase away the parts you want to have full color. Wham, bam, thank you ma'am.

[Edit: Kind of like Amerasu's suggestion, but instead of having the bottom layer desatured and erasing EVERYTHING except the flowers, you'd just erase the flowers in the grayscale layer above the colored layer. Alot less work involved for the exact same effect.]
