Topic awaiting preservation: a bit of a wip (Page 1 of 1)

Yah, I am workin on another flower scape dealio... not going for realism so much this time... we shall see what happens.

I think my biggest problem is depth, and making it look right... so any thoughs, and help would be greatly appreciated... please!?

As far as the depth issue goes, the biggest problem is that all of your darks and lights are still the same color.

You get a much better sense of depth when the shadows, rather than simply being a darker purple, instead grab something in the vein of a deep brown, or a dark burgundy, or what have you.....and the highlights could grab just the slightest hint of pale pale yellow, and so on...

mix those colors up!

as much as some people will disagree with this... It is how i started back... when... i started.

1) Find a pretty flower that?s pretty simple.

2) Slap it in photoshop

3a) Make yourself a color pallet... As Dl-44 said above, use colors in the pallet that you don?t even notice in the flower photo... such as brown/blue mix for shadows and white/yellow for highlights. For me, warmer colors work better for highlights than cooler colors. for example, blues just don?t work all that well to highlight a red/orange flower.

3) Start a new layer on top of the flower and start to copy it. Yeah I said it. In my opinion it really helps you learn how to shade the picture.

4) when you get a bit of paint splashed about, delete the photo of the flower... and don?t panic.

5) Start a new base layer under what you have painted to fill in all the holes you missed. Use a neutral color.

6) Flatten the 2 layers, start a new layer on top and bring that baby home.

I think that using the photo as a base layer is an excellent way to learn.

I think if you're serious about being an artist is any real world sense, it is very important that eventually that step is left out.

It is even more important, however, when learning about the use of color, that you use real life 3D references, as even the best photo will still not acurately capture color.

Reminds me a lot of van Gogh. I can't say much that hasn't been said, though.
