Friends, don't laugh. I am a newcomer tp Photoshop, and here is an idiotic (probably) question. I use Photoshop 7 and suddenly some tools stopped working: dodge/burn tool and healing brush. What is it - some kind of punishment from above?
Alex.

Try trashing the preferences and restarting Photoshop.

Aside from the solution you've mentioned, I think we'll need some more info to help with this issue.

What are the exact circumstances?
(how many layers? Are you sure you're on the right layer?)

Is this just on the most recent attempt to use them, or is this an ongoing thing?

Now, here's an important one: have you made a selection, and then tried to use the tools *outside* the selection? Did you perhaps hide the selection and forget you had made it?

Have you just recently installed new software or changed any of your computer's configurations?

Etc.....

D'oh... I do that a lot. Select things and then try to work outside the selection. Does the type of image mode affect which tools are able to be used? Mode as in RGB, CMYK, grayscale and the other selections?

Also, I know some people eschew filters, but sometimes my (Flaming Pear) Laquer filter wont apply itself to an image. Even after adding transparent layers, adjusting back to RGB mode, saving as jpeg, etc., ... If it's a small enough image I can do a "print screen" capture on the filter window and then work from that.
