I've looked in FAQ which had nothing relevant and at Google I could only find galleries and wishy washy explainations of what it is
"Fractal art is still in its beginning stages of development as a separate and accepted art form".

Which is pretty much what I want to know:
What is it ?
Does it have to be done with software like ultrafractal3 ?
Can it be done with plugins ?
Is it a case of using your head a lot with actions in PS ?

I know this is a fairly crappy question as I probably could just look harder, but I don't do it much or at all. Google meant going through a lot of pages to find anything decent.

<edit> Example done with Ultrafractal3 </edit>

Dont know of any plugins for PS. The Gimp has an assortment of fractals available in its Filters > Render > Pattern > Fractal Explorer dialog

a 15 second flit through the menu made this;

Is This Thing On?

This seems like a good place to post this.
I don't read German, but there are some great images of fractals
I am assuming Kai Krauss had something to do with

There is a whole new world taking shape in Byteburg.
Think I will start packing...

intro http://www.byteburg.de/website/e_pre_page/index.html

http://www.byteburg.de/g/introduction/intro

click on Biografisches (left menu)
then click Bilder (top menu ) to see some wonderful 3d fractals

maybe sib could shed some liight on the translation...?

that Kai...what a guy...he is such a genius, very wealthy one too,
he is into so many things...including, from what I have recently
tracked down, Social Computing...Hello World. Living now in
a 1,000 year old thinktank castle in Germany
Not to mention his contribution to Photoshop.
Simply mindboggling.

Basically he is talking about the old days, when he was still involved with Meta Creations and still did a lot of graphics stuff. Most of his inspiration for the images came from nature and images from the Hubble. If he had his way now he would make the older versions of the software he co-wrote or wrote available for free. He also mentions that a lot of the interfaces he wrote were never published - such as Realtime Animation to Music with Peter Gabriel or the Ideen (idea) Proccessor with Douglas Adams.

The images are more recent ones of old ideas he had. He is also talkine about showing more of his older work in time.

Steve wrote a great article on him , which is over at GN, maybe someone who has the link can post that.

Also in case someone doesn't know, the KPT's are part of Bryce in one of the Work Labs.

Hope that shed a little little on things

KPT 3.0 has fractal explorer built in it , works as a plugin for PS.
You can "surf" infinitely through your fractals that you create.
It's a nice little toy

Hugh I found ChaosPro to be a blast. You can delve as deep as you want from an understanding of the Mandlebrot and Julia formulas to making your own .avi of a zoom in or out of a fractel.

Actually, I think KPT5 is the one that has the fractal explorer. Pretty nifty, although I haven't used it in quite a while.
