Ok, in "art" (which is a joke), we've got to do a print project - basically just make a design and carve it into linoleum and then printify it. I have three designs, but having never done anything like this I'd like to know which one would work the best for this type of a project (ink the bottom (black colored parts being the parts that get the ink on the paper, white being negative space) and make printy). Which one would work best?

Numbers 1, 2

and

3

.

Also, here are some other sketches that I've made over the past couple of days (I got some India Ink (red and black) and several different opacity grey markers for Christmas, so I've been screwing around with those).

and

and

This one is my least favorite out of all of them - It's supposed to be a WW2 soldier, but I failed miserablely.

In general, crits would be appreciated as well

Although I like #1 the best, for your project would suit much better number 3.

Your first sketch is nice, but i think the red pen lines on teh white space REALLy kills it. I dont see them serving any purpose, and the 'pen feel' does fit very well with the image itself.

All of them are a bit too dark, which makes some details get easily lost, and make all the faces look a bit too much alike, as if tehy all were cousins (even when looking much loser they actually are different).

My favorite has to be the bird (and eagle, perhaps?), as I find it much better done than the faces, and has this (in lack for a better word) "grungy" style which i dig.

I remember doing that in my art class. We used wood slabs though, since our school was too cheap for linoleum.

I think your best bet is the third one, or possibly the first or second. The others have too much detail IMO.

I think #1 will make the most interesting print with #2 close behind.

if this is your first go at carving... I would go with 2.

^^So it's unanimous then^^ heh
Carving with those groovy little chisels, wow that takes me "back in the day". I seem to remember it being rather tricky too with a couple stabbed fingers and thumbs.
It's between #1 and #2 for me counterfeitbacon, what gives me doubts about #2 is the hair falling across the eye, that's going to be a real pain to pull off sucessfully. So that being said I suppose I would choose #1

1 and 2 are also my personal faves...
You need clean lines for print.
The other pictures that you posted are very good, but have too many conflicting lines, (details), to make a clean print from.
wonderful work btw.

What do you mean by they all look like cousins?

To me the pirate face looks nothing like the soldier face, and the print sketches all look fairly different.

I beleive that I am going to try out 3, and if that doesn't work, then 2. 1 doesn't do much for me.

Thanks for the imput - hopefully this linoleum stuff is fairly easy to carve.

Alevice, the idea was for them to be dark, but I'll have to work on not pushing the shadows so much - it's a habit of mine

Thanks for the input everyone.
