My two most recent sketches, hopefully a step in the right direction:

^ 1st is out of an anatomy book I bought recently, 2nd is from a figure drawing class that I caught the ass end of. (only 1 30 min session, I did a few other drawings from there, too).

^ Drawn upside down, as an exercize to break me out of my preconceived notions about the face, from a reference.

Both are very nice sketches. As far as the 'right direction'? No idea, where you headed in the end?

Drawing upside down is a fantastic excersize for training your eyes to see instead of drawing what your brain thinks is there from it's experience.

well done

I think you're definitely improving, cb. Thess pics seem more realistic and softer than your previous ones. Plus, I quite like the bold shading style you used in both pics.

No, I don't know of any, Boudga. To be honest, I had to look up what a rapidograph was! It sort of reminds me of the felt tip markers I used to love. I haven't drawn with one in years though. Next time I'm at the art store, I'll check it out as it looks like fun.

Googling rapidograph, I came across this artist's website which has some cool illustration work: www.indigoskynet.com

Your drawing/rendering skills are really on the ball. The next (very important) step is for you to take a life drawing class. Or at least attend a life drawing session. Once you have learned to draw the human body in it's many positions, shapes, sizes, etc, you will be unstopable.

cheers

Wow. Those first sketches look pretty darn accurate, anatomy-wise. Never tried drawing upside-down, although maybe now I'll give it a shot.

Thanks, I'm signed up for a figure drawing class in March, that lasts for several months. I'll see how much I improve from that.

Thanks for the crits/comments.
