Preserved Topic: Painting Exercise - Stylize this... (Page 1 of 1)

Instead of speed painting (or in addition to it), I thought we could try something a little different and see if maybe a few more people participate.

This idea came from Eatpoo's weekly activity forum. The idea is to is paint the photograph but to make it your own. See the example below - the original photo is on the left and the 3 paintings I did are on the right. One is basically a straightforward copy but the other two are only loosely based on the photo, just styled in different ways.



There's no time limit and if you want to paint a direct copy of the photo, go ahead. You don't have stylize it... though it is more fun I also thought having a pic to reference might help some of the new painters.

I'm not sure if I like this idea. It strays away from the central theme 'paint what you see' as opposed to 'paint what you want to see'. I'm sure there are plenty of ways for people to express styles with this but granted people can also develop a hell of a lot of bad habbits.

I really don't know. I'd like to hear what some other people have to say.

Edited to add everything below here. I wanted to explain this properly to Insider:

Using a photo as a reference is not a big deal, especially in this instance. Drawing from life is certainly the best way to learn because you're drawing a 3D view as opposed to a 2D view but that's neither here nor there for this particular painting exercise. The object here is not to paint photo realistically; it's to take the photo and make your own painting out of it. I don't want to see pixel for pixel painting here, I just want to see what you can do when you try to make the pose your own. This is just for fun, that's all
