i meant you know when creating websites .. we can create it for 800x600 and 1024x768 resolutions.

but the width and height to use is not exactly 800x600 or the other. it is less .. i remember seeing a post about this somewhere but inot sure where anymore..

Make your tables width 100% and you don't have to worry about it.

Look in the FAQ, there are issues with Liquid design in there. That would be your best bet.

Just because I'm a nice guy today I have looked it up for you. FAQ

I'm not always a nice guy

There is no sure bet on such things.

I gaurantee my broser window takes up a different amount of space than yours.

and everybody elses too.

Make liquid designs and you'll be all set.

The general rule is to make sure a page can fit within 750 pixels, so that you don't cause a horizontal scrollbar at 800x600. I usually go for 730 pixels just to be safe.

Above that, it should expand naturally to fit the browser window's size, remembering that not all people maximize their browser window! Work in 1024x768 with a non-maximized window, and make sure the site works no matter how you resize the window.

I agree the design should be fluid, but knowing the typical canvas sizes is also useful information, particularly if you want to be sure everything still fits when you shink to 640 or 800.

This article at Webmonkey has more than you ever wanted to know about canvas sizes, text sizes and form element sizes and it's all broken out by browser and version.

Slime's reminder that not everyone browses at full screen is well taken. Macintosh users almost never do anything at full-screen, nor do those of us with more than the usual amount of screen real estate.

Keep in mind too that many, let's say naive, users don't know how to close IE's history/favorites pane. Many don't even know you can. There are sidebar panes in current versions of the Gecko browsers and in Opera too. All that throws even more unpredictability into the mix.

Liquid is best, but knowing the common sizes and designing to accomodate them too isn't necessarily a bad thing. IMHO.

I don't think I could put it better than brucew's article. Thanks for the reference bruce.

You're welcome, jive. Happy to share.

Recently there was a discussion very similar to this one on thelist at evolt.org. That's where I found out about the Webmonkey article. There are many more resources at evolt, on this an many other topics, if you search thelistArchive, Tips, Articles and Comments.

The Asylum, GN and evolt are the three most important sites in my continuing education.
