I agree the design should be fluid, but knowing the typical canvas sizes is also useful information, particularly if you want to be sure everything still fits when you shink to 640 or 800. Slime's reminder that not everyone browses at full screen is well taken. Macintosh users almost never do anything at full-screen, nor do those of us with more than the usual amount of screen real estate. Keep in mind too that many, let's say naive, users don't know how to close IE's history/favorites pane. Many don't even know you can. There are sidebar panes in current versions of the Gecko browsers and in Opera too. All that throws even more unpredictability into the mix. Liquid is best, but knowing the common sizes and designing to accomodate them too isn't necessarily a bad thing. IMHO. [img]http://www.brucew.com/ozone/b-ozone-sig.gif[/img]
