Hi, guys. Liten to me, please. I am reading an article about "PICS meta tage". My underdtanding is that it enables us to control of accessibility to "unwanted" website such as sex and violence, right.

Usually teacher or parent want children not access to porn or violent site so that they turn on security in his or her browser.

My article said that I had to register my site with the RSAC, Safe Surf or any other group which creates ratings data. Then they send me an email to paste on my web site. Is that right?

I wonder if some web desiner do it. What do you reckon?

I've never heard of that. I think that if your site doesn't have anything to do with sex, violence, or drugs, you don't have to worry.

If you have a site that's about sex, but isn't pornographic (a site about sex-related health questions, for example) -- then you should probably register it with ratings groups to make sure that it doesn't get blocked.

Does anyone else know something about this topic?

Hiroki: Its up to you really some filtering software will not let children (other people?) not visit your site unless you have the right metatag in place. I'm sure you could get by perfectly happily without by well why not? As you say their sites let you fill out a few forms and it generates your metatag data so it isn't much effort.

Hi, thanks for your advice.
By the way, this is quite ethical issue, isn't it?
Is it totally up to web desiner if they put those meta tag on thier site, right?
Host server never say no to the customers, who want the site such as sex, violence, and drug? Also does it cost any to get those filtering met tag?
Any advice will be higly appreciated.

Hiroki: I'm not sure it is an ethical issue - if you want to allow as many people as possible to visit our site and you don't have strong content then its a practical issue (you don't have to have them but it can't hurt). If your site deals with matters touching on strong adult themes then it is your responsibility to get the appropriate tags so ethics comes in there (although so does a strong business sense - children aren't going to make great customers for porn so they are just wasting your bandwidth).

As far as am I'm aware most sytems are free.

I might start an FAQ on this as it would probably be useful - no time now so if anyone is else is so moved then feel free - stick it under 'Webdesign' or something.

You should put the META tags in. We've had them in most of our sites, and haven't seen any problems as a result. It only takes a few minutes, and as Emperor said, it couldn't hurt.

Let myself clear, guys. So it is up to my resposibility to put those meta tag or not.
And host server never mind what my web site about. They just accept what web desinger want to put on the net, right? Viewer who does not want to see those nasty site, can turn "filter" on in his or her browser, right?

thanks for your company and nice advices, in advance.

Hiroki: That is about it - if you don't have the tags anyone with filtering enabled (at least that kind of filtering) won't be able to see your page.

Anyway I have started a FAQ on this:

To your basic question: yes, it is up to you to decide whether or not you want to use such tags. The potential exists that some viewers will not be able to access your site without them in place, but the % must be very small I would think.

Of course, as Emperor said, the effort is minimal, so there's no real reason *not* to do it.

However, on a side note, this needs to be addressed:

quote:
Host server never say no to the customers, who want the site such as sex, violence, and drug?

That is often *not* the case. Many web hosts have strict "no porn" policies, as well as other content restrictions. So make sure to check what your host's policy is if you ever plan to have any sort of strong adult content.
