A friend of mine told me an interesting story.

quote:
Is that true if I make a link to very famouse, common and popular web site, my web site will be lanked in Search engine well. Then search engine will pick up my site well.

By that logic, everyone who links to Zeldman (which is just about anybody with any interest in web design, yours truly included) will automatically get higher rankings in the search engine. I'm no expert on the algorithms used by search engines, but I'm pretty sure that it's not important who you link to, but who links to you. In other words, I can link to as many "famous" websites as I want (and many people do) and still not improve my search engine rankings. However, if those "famous" websites were to link to me, my ranking would most likely improve.

A case in point is the Asylum. Google apparently loves the Asylum to bits, and things that get linked to here get high Google rankings. I have my site linked to in my sig, and I used to be as high as #2 on Google for "liminality." I say used to because now I'm somewhere on the 16th page. I would say that Google may have altered their algorithm to account for personal sites like mine, but the #1 hit for "liminality" is some typical adolescent blog. If I cared, I would attempt to figure out how I could have dropped from #2 to #160 something practically overnight. I am having difficulty mustering up the proper amount of concern, though.

So, the bottom line is that links from highly-perceived sites may improve your ranking--but getting a high search engine ranking involves a lot of work and a good deal of luck. The way I see it, it's really a lot of hit or miss (alltheweb, for example, still ranks me #2--go figure), and not something I personally fret over. Yeah, it's nifty to see yourself on the first page of results, but that's about it. At least that's the way it is for me.

[Edit: Geez... just for kicks I did a Google search on "sig rotator"--guess whose #1 Google is a fickle mistress...]

Hiroki: Its possible that links from your page to relevant high ranking ones might make Google think your site is more relevant in that area but, as Suho1004 says, the big boost comes from being linked to from high ranking sites. Which is why places like handson are 'prime real estate'.

With your URL, Suho, I'm sort of amazed you don't automatically win. www.alanmacdougall.com is consistently tops for the search "alan macdougall", anyway. Oh, and the quoted phrase "dragons rule the earth" turns up the Dragonhunt as number 3. Hurray!

On the other hand, I don't register at all in a search for "Milwaukee web design," which is something that might actually be useful.

Yeah, it's kind of weird... like I said, I was hovering around two or three for the longest time, and then suddenly I dropped to 160 something. It's really odd.

And you would think there would be a lot more competition for "sig rotator"...

...maybe other people (meaning forums and stuff) don't call them 'sig's?

PS is right - you can make up your own keywords and do pretty well in them but if they aren't ones being used by people then there doesn't seem much point Have a look at your web stats and see what people are actually using to reach your site.

That is a good point... I get the most hits for "what is liminality?" actually.

As for other boards calling them sigs, judging by the number of gaming weenies we get (or used to get--there seem to be fewer of them these days) asking how to host their sigs, I would say that "sig" is a fairly common term. I attribute the high ranking to the magic of the Asylum... and the fact that there is no band out there named "Sig Rotator" (at least not yet).

Suho - just as a side note, search google for sig rotator again, and look 5-6 entries down.....
