Topic: Good HTML beginner tutorial (Page 1 of 1)

My wife wants to be a web professional....so anybody here suggest a Good starting HTML tutorial and also Flash tutorial?

With all due respect, it makes me sad that people think they can become professionals in web design by reading a few tutorials.

This stuff is easy to pick up and extremely difficult to master, and people who think otherwise tend to produce pretty bad work, which lowers the reputation of web designers as true designers or artists.

If your wife is interested in becoming a professional, I strongly suggest that she looks into taking classes on whichever topics interest her most; perhaps design, maybe programming, or something else. I'm sure people around here can help point out the right type of classes to take (or the right type of degree to work for) for someone interested in a particular area of web development.

At the very least, buy a book or two. Web tutorials aren't the way to go when you're looking to make a career out of something.

well...she's got a good design sense...so I think she will do goon in Flash things...so need to learn basic HTML, CSS ,Graphics, Flash etc....it's all about look and the quality...i strongly believe that reviewing few tutorial can't make anybody a professional web developer....but what want from you is a good suggestion to be web designer.....

Honestly, when I read your post I thought : "well, go buy 'web design & development for dummies'" and refrained to post something that harsh. But it feels good to say my inner thought. Glad to see Slime expressing it in more polite words.

As Slime and CPrompt said, your wife should search a class of design, communication, advertising, "multimedia", computer science or something in the same vein. It depends of your location, the academic/profesionnal background of your wife, the amount of time she is willing to spend in her search for the Holy Grail, anyway if you live nearby a big city she should be able to find a university/school providing some courses in the above mentionned domains.

I hope you don't really think that becoming professional happens in a slapping of fingers and that it's just a problem of language that lead us to think otherwise. A professional deals with some difficulties, the endless change of mind of the clients, some technical/schedule constraints ... that kind of things you don't really learn in tutorials.

Well, she's going to have to go back to school if she wants to change professions. I don't know where you are but here colleges have an accelerated course for those that have a degree in one field and want to get one in something totaly diffent. Since she does have her MBA, she's looking at 2-3 years and she would have a BS in computer programming.

Along the way, grab some freebee jobs to build up a portfolio and by the time she's done...she has a degree and a protfolio to help land a job.

shalvi: Well everyone has to start somewhere - tutorials are good (try the GN - link at the bottom. I am owrking on a HTML 101 tutorial although don't hold your breath) but you can't beat practice. If she got some free work (local charities, etc.) and fixed up a homepage to experiment with then that would give her the focus to apply what she has learnt and to give her ideas about what extra areas need to be investigated.

I started off by being bored one afternoon and picking up a HTML book and working through it but that only gives you an idea of the mechanics and if you want to learn to speak a language you can read all the text books you want but you need to get out there and speak to the natives
