Make some kick-ass personal sites, post the UR:'s on your CV, and send it to as many design houses as you can shake a stick at. Also, try and do some 'freebies' for local companies. You'll be doing them a favour, and they'll be adding to your repertoire. They may even reccomend you to their 'friends' - who you can charge!
