I just picked up a client who requires an eCommerce solution and not just an 'about us' page!!!
(Has around 30 items for sale, via a shopping cart interface).

Problem is, I don't know what premuim this service fetches (if any).

Anyone have any guidelines for such an occasion?

Dufty: What kind of server-side scripting do you have available to you? There are now some great easy to instal and (in some cases) free packages availabel like. osCommerce. which should make your life much easier:

Do you also have to sort out the arrangements with the credit card firms?

Price depends awfully on where you are and how big your portfolio is.

Things like osCommerce make your life much simpler and quicker and it might not if installing an eCommerce solution ould be anymore difficult than adding a forum or doing any other part of the site so I'm not sure if you can charge extra for it - someone else here will.

Thanks Emperor, the osCommerce info will prove invaluable.

I was hoping for an 'out-of-the-box' solution, and this will be a great help and since I'm also required to scope the hosting, I'll make sure they have php/mySql support.

It'll also allow me to pitch slightly lower than I originally thought, which will pretty much guarantee the sale. -YAY-

Just need to build some nice 'previews' now... off to work I go.

If I post some of these as I build them, anyone fancy ripping them apart for me?
It's my first 'fashion' site, and I'd appreciate any criticism you guys have to offer.

In advance... thanks

Dufty: It should cut a lot of time out of your development time - using this combined with PHP/MySQL should greatly reduce the cost to the client - which makes them happier too and more likely to pass your name around to anyone who asks. Feel free to post the previews here or in the 'Site Reviews' section.

Be usre to let us know how you found osCommerce as its important to know how various people coped with it

phpShop is also a good alternative. I have used it before and it is easier to customize I think. Everything is run through 1 PHP file which makes things less cluttered. I like it a lot! Only problem with phpShop I really had is that it only allows you to add one product at a time. I had to use phpMyAdmin to upload a database for it. Also, I had to change some sloppy code. But you can add modules for PayPal (or write your own), and Authorize.net. osCommerce takes quite a bit longer to customize though.

for 30 or so products that shouldn't be a problem, right?

but I'm sure there's gotta be a place where you can add them all..

Looks at Dreamhost's Strictly Business plan, it includes Miva Merchant which should be way past adequate for 30 items. Sounds like a static inventory? All you'd have to do in addition is take care of the credit card services merchant account thingie and you'd have what you need there. The support staff is easy to get along with on this stuff too, very helpful.

Thanks for the input guys.
So many products to choose from, but osCommerce looks the winner so far.

<edit>
Site taken down for further development - client likes what he's seen so far - enough to sign the contract!
</edit>

Thanks again for your help.
