My problems is I never seem to charge enough, and the guy down the street doing it for more seems to get all the work, and it more often than not looks like absolute crap. IThis is a very compounding issue to me.

Now Tyberius Prime expects him to start complaining that we removed his 'free speech' since this message will replace all of his posts, past and future.
Don't follow his example - seek real life help first.

Good question. I don't really have an answer for that. I do that a lot huh?

mob68com: He might charge more but his extra work might be due to him:

1. Having a bigger portfolio.

2. Having more contacts.

3. Charging more - perhaps people think that something worth doing well is worth paying for.

I hear what your saying. But for some reason I'm running into a lot of "designers" that couldn't design a paper plane, let alone a website. The majority of sites I've seen done by these people are all for the most part done usinf Frontpage (older versions), have no existance of table, correct coding, bad graphics, and fonts that look like whoever put them together makes it look like their first website, but all the time. This is my own personal experience being that I am for the most part freelance, but it kills me that people will pay an outrageous amount of money for something that looks like crap. Is it that if the site looks good that they think it's going to cost more? It seems that way. If they have the business it's probably because they're working to get that business, which equals overhead, which equals higher prices. There's much more to making money than the manufacturing process, what good is it to build something if noone knows about it to buy it? Sounds like noone knows about you.

Just had an extrmely quick peek at your site. I would suggest a more professional presence and seperating the business from the personal content if you're serious. Maybe knock out a subdomain to stash the personal stuff in.

Or if you're going to have a !@#$% useless splash page (:P) make it the forking point (business/personal), althought that wouldn't be a complete seperation now would it? Good luck widit.

Getting business is unfortunatley not made by a good website, or good content.

I've been in this stuff (IT) a while now (appr 10 years) and there really are only two, three things that really count.

1 - Branding. You must be seen, everywhere, all the time.
Print real professional business cards, flyers, ads if you can afford them and make a point of spreading them around.
Say you drop down to the coffee shop where you kow the business ppl hang, drop a bunch of business cards here and there, leave one or two on the table, in the sofa, stuff like that, talk to the manager and ask if you could have a couple laying on the counter for the customers. Things like that.

2 - Networking. This is all about getting personal, lot's of legwork, lot's of time, give them a face to go with the business card.

3 - References. There is no one that can sell you as well as a happy customer that recommends you! Never ever forget that... The more the merrier.

Back all of this up with a professional site (and no, no personal stuff in there as long as it's not work related) As your name begins to get known you will be able to raise your fees as you get more work than you can handle. Charge extra for short deadlines and be very clear on what they get for their money. This is expected from pros.
