Be sure to take the stuff out of the body tag though. Then look at it. If you still have the bgcolor="whatever" in the <body> tag then that is what you are going to get and the CSS stuff is going to be left out. Bookmark that link that Emps gave you. You will want to read that stuff very carefully. Sometimes it can be a little confusing especially if you haven't been coding in a while, but keep at it and try to understand everything that is going on. W3C is the best resource for Web Stuff. IMHO <edit> I keep forgetting to tell you this.
