The iris is quite nice.
The overall is less impressive though - the iris and the rest of the eye appear to be two seperate entities slapped on top of each other.
It's important to remember that the iris is not an object that sits on top of the eyeball, it is a part of it. It's also very important to remember that the cornea covers the entire the thing, and as such, the reflections and highlights don't stop at the edge of the iris.
It's a pitfall that most people doing their first eyeball images fall into, and it is a serious detraction. Another is the seeming 'shadow' around the iris.
So, it's a great start, and the iris itself is quite nice, but for any sense of realism you need to get the two parts of the image looking like a single object, and get the ball looking a bit more...ball-like.
And remember, the eye is *always* wet...

Other than the thing DL mentioned , the iris is a bit too large in relation the the ball. Remember that most of the eye is hidden by the socket and lids.
Nice start. Keep it up.

If you're going for realism, I suggest you make veins around the eyeball as well. In any case, even if you follow Ben Stiens add and use eye cleaner, you're always gonna have some fleshy red. Heh.

Is it any better now?

Definite inprovement =)
My next suggestion would be to work on a background other than plain white - it will also help add some depth and relaism. I'd either make it a transparent if, or throw some sort of muted color behind it, perhaps a hint of an actual scene the eye is sitting in?
I'm also a little distracted by the highlight on the bottom right of the iris. Logicaly, because the cornea is reaised there, you tend to see a faint highlight on the opposite side of the main highlight - so since your main highlight is on the top-right, the secondary would generaly end up on the bottom-left, from the light making it *through* the cornea. It should also be less sharply defined - I would blur it a bit, and perahps set it,s blending more to color dodge at a low opacity to more of an ambient light than a clear highlight.

*YEACH!* IMO, it looked really bad with the transparent background, so I tried with a gray one... It's better than the transparent one, and it isn't white... so here goes:

The main reason it deosn't look so good transparent is that the dark background here nullifies the small amount of shading you have on the eye.
If you add more depth to the eyeball, it will help a greta deal.
On the grey background, the sharp tight dropdhadow makes it look like a disc instead of a ball.
=)
Here's an old one, and needs some serious improvements I know, but it does give a good indication of the roundness and the depth of the eyeball -

Looks like you used some textured brushes in there... and some really soft ones.
Are you using the airbrush... or the paintbrush?
It might be in your best interest to start using slightly harder brushes.

Not bad work guys.
Some thing that all of the above seem to be missing -
1) the Caruncula and th e Semilunar Fold (you , the pink stuff in the corner...)
2) the corner of the eye that actually accomodates the caruncula - the inside corner of the eye has a far different shape than the outside...
3) Because of what Docilebob mentioned above - the eyeball being too small for the iris - the eyes seem to be forced wide open, because the eyelids were made to fit the too-small eyeball.
And Zlather - on tbe brushes front - well, soft brushes are easier when you're starting out, because you can get stuff put into place quicker. But in the long run they are not easier at all, becuase the more you learn and the mor eyou practice, the more detail you'll begin putting in, and the soft brushes don't work so well.
The other thing I would caution is to make sure you don't rely on dodge/burn to get what you want. It's no subsititute for actually painting, and it will only detract from your picture.
And finally - don't take any of these comments as negative - if I didn't see some sort of promise in your work, I would never take this much time to type all of this =)

Once again, the shape of the eye is all off, unless you're staring into the mirror with your fingers holding your eye as wide open as possible...
Which is why it's important, if you're going the route of making the actual eyeball, to make the ball large enough to properly accomodate a human face.
Did a quick example here -

It's because insider is following (far too closely) a loose tutorial on roughing out an eye in PS. He missed the point, hence the recreation of an eyelid that is far too open for the circumference of the iris.
Andre: Nice work, very sweet style and stroke.

Do you all use wacom tablets?
I find it quite hard to draw all the necessary lines for my eye when I'm using the mouse...

I tried to make something like you did, but it looked like a piece of junk!
