Well, I finally bit the bullet and started on my own design site. I feel like I am finally in a position to offer professional web design. Please critique my first front page revision.
http://www.visi.com/~jiblet

I banged this out from a rough sketch I did Friday over about 8 hours on Saturday. When it's completed there will be a search box and sitemap link as well as some 88x31 links to some of my favorite design sites (OZONEs, Topazdesigns, to name a couple)

I dig the sharp corners and such. Good development, but a personal note would be that I've never been a big fan of green & purple as the main colors for a site. The blue bars almost off-set this, but not quite. I really dig the mouseovers, though, with the arrows--that's pretty clean.

And, as you could tell from looking at graphic minutiae, I dig center-oriented, smallish interfaces. It's very good usage of blank space (white, black, whatever).

However, another note on color; the text is rather difficult on the eyes, since it's a lavender/dk. green on black, and fairly small--though I dig small letters. I would almost say to change the text to a light gray (#CCCCCC) or something to give it a little more legibility. With that in mind, I'd change the link color from that neon green to white, or perhaps that lavender if you're feeling saucy.

All in all, clean design.

Everything's great except the color scheme. Color is totally personal taste though. I don't like purple and green together, and black backgrounds make me cringe. Nice design though.

Well I lightened everything up quite a bit and switched the text to light gray and lavender with subtle very light aqua-green links. Hopefully that solves the legibility issues (I forgot how dark some people's monitors are). Made the rollovers and title cooler too <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/smile.gif">

I like the purple green thing still, so unless NO-ONE likes it I'll probably just stick with it. I promise to make the next version a non-black background color scheme.

Yeah...the gray really made it all work a little easier with my eyes. I dig it. The mouseovers got creepy, though. Not sure if the outlining thing works too well, but it's your dime. <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/smile.gif"> <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/smile.gif"> I dig, though, on the whole.

Ah thank you. FYI, before the links were darker green rolling over to the lighter green they start out as now. Likewise the title was the same darker green but not the halo effect like it is now, just the inner black part was there (if you turn your brightness up to the max you should be able to see that it's still a very very dark green). The main text was lavender with the blockquote a mid-range green.

I'm working on the sub-page design now and gonna try to get at least 1 tutorial up before I start handing out business cards <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/smile.gif">

I like the site too; very clean and all. It took maybe a *little* too long to load on my 56 K modem; It looks like you have a couple jpegs with a ton of black in them, that you could do instead with a small transparent gif image stretched to the right size.

Looking at your code now. Does the "span" tag work in Netscape Navigator? I've never been successful with it in NN...

On a personal note, I think light green and purple go *well* together! Then again, my choice of colors has certainly not always been approved by others... =)

hmmm, didn't mean to use a span tag. Dreamweaver does silly things sometimes, oh well, still works in Netscape 4.73 PC tho.

In fact, it works better in Netscape than in IE 5 (background image not showin up.

BTW, the images with mostly black (i.e. few colors) are saves as GIFs, so don't think breakin the tables down more will help, besides, there will be 88x31 links to some of my fav designers there.

Ah, OK.

BTW, I looked at the code, and I think the reason the background images aren't showing up in IE is because you put them in the <tr> tag. Try putting them in the <td> tag instead.

How embarassing <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/smile.gif">

Maybe it's time to start using Notepad

Still it's interesting that it actually works in navigator.
