OK, so when I was young, I was a huge Dr. Who geek. Watched it every Saturday night on PBS. I still have a load of books and a toy Dalek or two tucked away somewhere. (Plus Peter Davison's autograph.) I even caught the movie they aired on Fox years ago that failed to resurrect the series here in the U.S.
I was mildly excited to hear they restarted the series recently, and I've become more interested as I've heard it's actually not bad. And, interestingly, I've been dating a girl who, as it turns out, was a Dr. Who geek when she was young, as well. (We're both cool enough now that watching such things makes us interesting, not nerdy. )
Well, as luck would have it, the SciFi Channel is premiering the new series on March 17th! I haven't seen any publicity on it -- I just happened to see it on the SciFi site when I was checking some Battlestar Galactica info (seriously, I'm really not that into sci-fi) -- so, I thought I would just share this news with any closet fans here who didn't happen to know about it.
I only managed to catch four or five of the last series, but I liked them, some of them I really liked actually, come to think of it again.
Have you checked some of these links before Wes? ~Beware the first one plays the theme tune automatically~ Cult Dr Who webcasts
Or for the perfect gift, one size fits all: Dr Who scarf
Here's some stuff on the new series. This link has a really annoying sound loop at the beginning. Whoops, just noticed, that the site may only be good for the UK. Dr Who homepage
I've seen the whole first season of the new Doctor WHO, it already aired on the CBC. You won't be disappointed. The Christmas special (which I don't know if it will air on SciFi or not) was the introduction to the next Doctor. I'm giddy to see season two of WHO now.
I've been a WOHvian since I was a very young man. I've got two scarves, one 11 1/2 feet, the other 15 feet. Nicley striped and all. Lots of other odd assorted bit of novelty and nostalgia. My wonderful bride has instructed me that I need to build a lifesize TARDIS, she too is now a WHO fan since seeing the new WHO.

Thanks Wes,
I saw an ad on the Sci-Fi channel last week that Dr.Who was coming but they didn't say when.
Our PBS channel dropped Dr. Who last year because the BBC stopped licencing the old Dr. Who in the US when they started production on the new one. I've been waiting ever since for the new one to be shown.
There was a nifty Dr. Who boxset out here before Xmas (if you have multiregional it is well worth it).
I was worried but they did a great job. I was worried about the new Doctor (even though the Whojadeen/Whositas I know had given it the thunbs up) but the Xmas special put that one to rest and he says he is in for the long haul which is great too.
Now we have to see if they can work their magic with the Torchwood (yes its an anagram) spin off that stars (well I won't spoil that one for you if you haven't seen the new series) and was set up in the Xmas special too.
Seems like the great days of Doctor Who are back - time to hide behind the sofa (seems someone has moved it back a bit since I was a kid as there seems far less room back there now).
I don't think Torchwood is gonna be all that great. It's a Doctor spin-off, not the Doctor. However I must be dense, I don't get how they set it up in the Xmas special? I've seen the special, I just don't remember anything that screamed "Torchwood".
BTW if you want the new WHO boxed set, it'll be available here in the states this summer. Part of the deal with SciFi was to push the release back a bit.
errrm... maybe I am missing something, but does the show get any better than the first 2 episodes? I was kind of hoping for a whole lot more than that...?
*sigh* some people just don't have what it takes to appreciate fine television programming.
Perhaps, you should try and check out some of the old episodes. Doctor Who is, and always has been, one of the best programs around. Not counting that icky 1999 Fox movie, that was just awful.
I'm still working on this last season of Galactica. The girl I've been dating hadn't seen it, so I taped the third season while we watched seasons 1 and 2 on DVD. Now I've got her hooked.
omg, I loved the first two episodes, well, 3 now
if Dr Who was on PBS, then i missed it - must have been when i was thinking only the boring watched the "boob tube" .. LOL a bit snobby i know, but hey, we all make mistakes

velvetrose:
These new episodes of Doctor Who have not been on PBS. It seems the BBC has been making it increasingly harder for the PBS stations here to show Doctor Who over the last five years. The PBS station here continued to show older episodes until last year when the BBC cut off export of Doctor Who to the US altogether in Feb 2004. They were one of the last two or three stations still showing Doctor Who.
Apparently the BBC sees more money available to them by distributing Doctor Who through the Sci-Fi channel than through the PBS stations. By only allowing distribution through Sci-Fi and creating box sets of DVDs that can be sold through Sci-Fi, they hope to create a new marketing channel.
Yes, I agree with you theses new shows are very good. I'm pleasantly surprised to see that the quality is as good or better than the older shows.
I know what you mean Ian, he's nothing but a schoolboy! I tell ya Time Lords are getting younger by the minute.
I've just realised, if you are up then it must be late for me. ~Looks outside, still dark, perhaps I should attempt to throw some Zeds at the ceiling.
I very nearly missed the New Earth episode today, I don't have a TV so was dependent upon watching it somewhere else. I arrived "somewhere else" late so missed the first five minutes which meant I was the fool on the floor (all chairs being taken) saying "who's that, what's wrong with them?" to a chorus of Shhhhh! and thrown sweet papers.
Still takes a bit of getting used to, the scenery not shaking, but I really enjoyed it.
The story went like this:
New Earth is Hmmmmm~!*^*?
