Isn't it about time for some new mods?

We've got forums with mods listed who haven't showed their face around these halls for an eternity.

It might be handy having other mods there as I've been pretty busy and haven't had the time to give it the proper attention it deserves but that said the other MSs do a fine job as roving mods so.........

krets: Righto so they are:

------------
DHTML:
mr.maX, Slime, Bugimus, InI

Server-side:
mr.maX, WarMage, bitdamaged, InI

Photoshop:
docilebob, Michael, Jeni, warjournal

Big sigs:
mahjqa, Human Shield, eyezaer, Weadah

Site reviews:
Emperor, mbridge, YoYoFREAK, Allewyn
---------------------

Although I'd like to hear what the other mods (of the relevant forums) think persoanlly I can't see any problems with the PS forum. There has to be the provision for one or 2 mods to be on extended leave (as long as the other mods are active and OK with that) and I would be loath to remove mr.maX or Weadah from their positions, esp. as their skills and input are of the highest quality. In sigs majhqa does a great job and eyezaer is around and Human Shield has returned. Apart from Site Reviews all the other moderators are around here and drop in and out.

I could see the case for pos. injecting some new blood in as I don't think 4 was a set upper limit on the number of mods. I do also think we need to resolve the future of the HTML and XML/CSS boards as they were created with the idea that their activity would be reviewed.

One thing where there has been problems is in archiving - InI has done a great job in both his forums but when researching FAQs I will run across relevant old threads that should have been archived (I have tried to arhive anything that I found). However, the New Asylum should make archiving a much more straightforward process so mods can concentrate more on the smooth running of the forums, etc.

krets: I'm not sure it is sentimentality more selfish self-interest (at least on my behalf) by leaving them as mods it would act as an encouragement for them to return once they have more free time. That level of skill and knowledge is not something I'd be happy with discarding so easily - I'd be happier with getting a fifth mod in some of those forums so we have people who can help pick up some of the slack left by our missing members. In the end this (and the fate of the HTML and XML/CSS forums) are up to the Doc and his longer term strategy. If he didn't want more than 4 mods then perhaps we should consider bumping out missing members.......

InI: Exactly:

quote:
What you found relevant that I didn't archive was certainly "ambiguous" to me.

which is why we need more than one active archving mod/forum (that way we can cover a greater range of expertise, interest, etc.). Hopefully the system TP is putting in place will make this whole process smoother and easier (worthwhile active threads can be marked to be automatically archived when they have been inactive for a while, threads linked to from the FAQ will get archived, etc.).

I think after a member has been gone right at a year or so then they would have no problem being replaced as being a mod since they aren't around to do their share. I know I wouldn't. If they return it won't be due to being a mod or not.

As far as closing threads; if it's turned to nothing more than a kindergarden level of fussing and of no use to the Ozone it will be closed. That's how it's always been and I feel sure will be. That's been the way long before some of you were here. No limits to stupidity around here at times and no limit to closing a useless, pointless thread. After a while you would think some would get the picture and think...wow if I show my A** their gonna shut down my threads. See? Simple huh ?

(preface - obviously this is stated as my opinion)

Well, there's the (I believe) obvious things like krets mentioned - wakkos, Mr Max, mbridge, grumble, and few other simply aren't around, and mods who *are* around need to be filtered into the apporopriate areas. It's not a bad thing - things change, people's availability change, and it's pretty common practice that mods change as circumstances do.

To me it is painfully clear that Ini is not capable of holding a position as a moderator. Being a moderator has little to do with your knowledge of the subject - personal responsibility is a very large issue, and someone who threatens to hack and reformat the computers of other members (among other things) demonstrates very clearly that they do not have the level of responsibility to be moderating *anything* at all. When that person explodes everytime anything remotely negativve is said about them, and proceeeds to take it all out on anyone and everyone around, the situation is even more clear.

{{edit - and as I posted, this incapability has been demonstrated further. a member being '6 years younger' has little to do with anything either}}

I think Suho would be a prime candidate for site reviews mod.

Michael has demonstrated repeatedly that he is Mad Sci material.

Dracusis could fit into a variety of slots as a mod.

And aside from that, I think we're at a point where there may simply be too many mad sci's, many of whom are seldom around...though that is a vague issue and perhaps of small relevance.

Shiiizzzam: I agree a year seems reasonable unless the situation is desperate. Both mr.maX and Weadah are Mad Scis so technically not having their name listed as forum mods wouldn't actually stop them from being to do their duty - in fact should Mad Sci's really be listed as forum mods as they have a more roving remit (I suppose it doesn't matter).

It is probably best not to set a limit on that but do on need - are some forums in need of having missing mods swapped? I'd say yes for Site Reviews but the others......

Anyway I'd second the nominations of Veneficuz and Suho1004 but I think it might be a little early for nominating people. I also agree that making Micahel a Mad Sci would make a lot of sense but only if changed his name back to taxon.

Print Graphics really needs a new mod, and maybe a name change to get more traffic like "print graphics and desktop publishing", or maybe we should just axe it as it hardly ever gets used. People wanting to know about print issues will like ask in the PS forum anyhow. I also think the Multimedia and PS Pong forums could do with new mods.

Oh and I defiantly think Soho would make a great addition to the reviews forum. As for me, well, I'm willing to do my bit for the community if the need arises, if not then eh, I'll just keep doing my thing. I also think JK would make an excellent mod, especially for the multimedia forum given his experience in digital video and other related technologies.

Although I thought Doc was the only one who had access to make/remove moderators and mad scientists???

About de-modding persons who haven't been around.. it makes sense to demod them after a year or so, but on the other hand, it doesn't hurt if they stay. There's this line about 'you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave'. For the big sig forum; I don't think there's anything that needs to change. Human Shield is back, Izzy's around here someplace, and Wead could show up again anytime.

I'm pretty agreeable to the folks that have been mentioned that would be good to swap out.
Here's my specific list however:
Max, Jeni, Wead, Wak, Grumble, twitch... and an overhaul in the site reviews.
I don't think that anyone would be particularly fiesty because they've been removed from the mod listing of a forum in their absence. The reasoning behind the appointment to those positions should speak of their character that we all know already.
Whereas Max, Wead, and Stephen are all MadSci's already... it doesn't affect their "status" all that much..... it's just moving their name from the forum listing... and they still retain their privvies.
Jeni, Grum, and Wakkos are the issue I see. Can they even stay Psychotics as non-listed moderators?... I'd imagine so. We don't have anything like that now..... but eh... times are changin' I suppose. As been said... it's up to the Doc for stuff like this.
There is of course the topic of perhaps having more "titles" that comes up every 6 months or so..... Perhaps we could just give the folks who have gone on a bit of a sabbatical, a different/new title ... I dunno, just a thought. It's not like you're going to see their name in threads, so it's not a very large issue.
JK would be a good psychotic in the Multimedia section...
Suho and Veneficuz have my tip of the hat for Site Reviews...
Again, Drac could be listed in a few places I think...
On a somewhat related note, bumping krets' MadSci status into effect under the new nick would be good housekeeping.

I don't really think Pong needs to have anything new assigned. It's not a high traffic area... and hopefully there won't be a use for that section in a few months anyway. (that's wishful thinking at this point... but eh.. we'll see)

Archiving can really be a pain. I've been slack about it, that's for sure. With the incorperation of the FAQ, I just see it pointless to archive unless you're scouring the FAQ to slip the link into various places. Although it'd be nice to do a little bit of archiving everyday.... that's a tough task. I'm far more likely to sit down and archive for 5 hours straight.

I know the Doc is busy, but unfortunately I do think some decisions have to be made.
