i've got a new pc now with a athlon 1,333mhz. and it's cpu-temperature is on about 62°Celsius.
is this already critical? i'm new to pc cooling and dont know what temperatures are dangerous and what not.

How did you measure the temperature?

I have a friend who just set up water cooling for his new athalon, not sure on the details but he said hes running at 46° and has no leaks as yet. I would check some overclocking sites about temp concerns, they are usually quite in touch with the extremes and know what is dangerous. I like hardocp.com but there are a lot of others.

jeni, my MSI-motherboard features temp measuring as well as measuring rpm of the fans. *very proud* :-)
i could give you a screenshot of the program 'PC Alert' if you want to.

moaiz, watercooling is a bit .... ahem... strange i think. i dont want to get such extreme solutions. afaik you have to place some water bottle next to your pc for this.

any other experiences with cpu-temps?

ooh ooh! Something I can possibly respond to intelligently!

Ok, I also have an Athalon 1.33 Ghz processor which I watch the temperature on somewhat closely.

I think that optimal is 50°Celsius or lower. Personally I am running idle at 48-49° and when I'm taxing the cpu playing Tribes2 or Operation Flashpoint then it will get up to 51°Celsius. 62° is hotter than I would want to be running. This will mainly affect the life of your cpu. You may notice performance loss over time with your cpu running hot.

I have a Black ThermoEngineTurbo on my cpu. The actual heatsink is the same as the Black ThermoEngine but with a bigger fan. It isn't quiet, but I don't think it is really loud either. Then I have a fan on the power supply, a 60mm fan on the back of my case, MotherBoard fan, Fan on my GeForce3 Deluxe, 80mm front fan, then a fan on my Plextor CD-RW. How many is that? I may have missed one, but I have a total of 8 fans sitting in my case.

Don't think that I'm a freak either, that title is reserved for my friend TuffCake, who cut a hole in the side of his case to put a 120mm fan. His box flies around the room if it isn't bolted down

You may want to check around your computer to see if there is adaquate room for ventilation, that will also make a difference. Give your box room to breath, don't stick it in a cramped little hole.

Don't forget to open up your box and blow dust out at least once a month, depending on your environment. Smokers (don't play innocent Doc) would want to dust their computer out often. I would even suggest one of those air filtering thingys.

I know a lot of people don't think about cooling their system, but most people buy their computer from some dealer that already put it together for them. When you get into constructing your own machine then it is something you have to consider. I hope that helps.

<::EDIT::>Damn, I was supposed to be first! I just had too many interuptions typing this at work. Oh well.<//EDIT::>

I think you had better read this !!!

Your gonna be toast

=-EDIT-= as another note with regards to the post above me, you should consider an exhaust blower (or 2 ), these are not quiet either, but with a CPU that you got, you cannot afford to hold back on cooling , i also have a shit load of fans in my custom built box, i have HD fans and fans to cool down the my video card, a hole cut in the side of my box, fitted with a window that allows me to view things inside ( in case any of the fans stop _, the point we are trying to make here is, cooling is as important as the CPU itself, because without cooling you will be without a procesor too before long. Just a bit of friendly advice for ya.

Neat Grumble. I just didn't think about an app that measured temp. Here I was picturing you bent over your computer holding a thermometer between your thumb and forefinger. ROFL. I'm a little s l o w.

blook, all fans together i have 4 fans in my box. and i'm thinking of buying a slot-cooler (a thin cooler, which you place on a normal pci-slot). thanks for your tips!

axleclarkeuk, thanks for that link! hope i'll never reach 90°C

hey mikey! nice to see you! havent heard of you for a loooong time!
no, i havent overclocked my cpu; the fan on it is a Spire Copper Cooler... it is said to be very good, but im not so confident with 62°C!!!

Uber-Overclocking? LOL. I'm going to over-overclock my cpu. hehehe. Just playing, I think it is funny you said that.

I've seen Mikey flame in the past and so I am afraid right now, but I have to disagree with him. Cooling is quite important, even if you aren't going for the "Uber Computer" (which is actually what I call my computer). If you want your computer to last long then you need to keep things cool. I do agree, however, that bundling your cables is a very good idea. I don't know if you need to go as far as cutting your IDE cable to minimize the surface area to allow more air to flow. I have heard and seen people do this and it does drop the temp a bit, but I know my friend had to replace his IDE after a while because it was having problems since he cut it up.

Grumble, slot fan might be a good idea. Another idea is a HDD fan, those can really help a lot too. Granted every fan you put into your box will make it a little louder, but for me I think it is worth it. Besides, my box sits under my desk and doesn't bother me.

Oh, one more suggestion. You said you had four fans total? Then Mikey asked if they were "cpu, power supply, graphics card, and case fan?" Well going off this I would suggest one more case fan. You would really benefit from one in the front pulling air in and one in the back blowing air out. This really gets the air flowing and cooling things down.
